2025 defensive starters as of the new year

I think Jeudy will emerge as one of our better players next year. Again, he hasn't really gotten the chance to yet due to who he was behind. There are so many examples of players emerging later in their careers as they get comfortable with the system and get the chance to make an impact on game days. So many of these players are written off, even at elite schools, because they don't fit the instant gratification generation, but these are the types of players that are essential to winning anything of meaning.
Why didn't he flash then when he got his shot? RVP flashed big time when he got his shot. Jeudy hasn't. He has had plenty of time to show that he is a starter quality dude and he hasn't done it. I like having him on the team, but he is not a starter and if he is we are ****ed on the front lines.

DE: Nwaneri / Lenhardt
NT: Transfer / Jeudy
DE: Van Poppel / Davis
Jack: McGahee / Merritt
LB: Shavers / Stenger
LB: Transfer / C. Jones
CB: Wright / D. Jones
CB: Transfer / Marshall
S: Buford / Buford
S: Transfer / Rhett
Rover: McCullough / Gradney

There will be more shake ups with the portal and there will be a few surprise guys who can take a step this off season. There are some good young DBs who can hopefully emerge.
I really wish we could get a Caleb Downs type player for our Rover. That dude is unreal. I thought that kid from high school in Oklahoma might be that guy, but he bounced.

Another guy I wouldn't write off. Has had a bit of a sophomore slump, which isn't all that uncommon. Agree he's a bit of a tweener right now and needs a little extra time to get used to carrying around more weight.

Oh I'm definitely not counting him out. I'm just stating my observations from last year. Not sure what the cause could be. Just starting his play on the field wasn't as good as last year.

Jeudy has flashed - big time. That you don't know this shows you aren't paying attention or don't know what you're watching.

Some of the guys we think are studs on these elite teams are constantly shit on by their own fans. Kind of like you're doing in this thread to some of our players. Just off the top of my head OSU's starting corner and Notre Dame's leading receiver.

Interesting take from someone who constantly shits on our true fresh QB - a position that is infinitely more complex than DL. Lol

Seems like a defender with multiple years of college experience should show greater improvement year over year…

He has shown improvement year over year. And what's so complex about the QB position? Throw it to your guys, don't throw it to the other team. How hard can it be.

haha this shows your ignorance and low football IQ. You can no longer be taken seriously not that you ever were.

Hartzog is a massive liability at 5’7”.

Tackling is bad and doesn’t win 50/50 balls
Hartzog would be better as a slot corner. He often gets burned on deeper routes against taller receivers, but I think what the coaches like about him is that he's always close. He doesn't seem to make a lot of mental errors, pretty reliable but has size & speed limitations. A slot receivers are smaller guys who run shorter routes the majority of the time.

My problem with these older, "decent" players is are the coaches just going to start them no matter what? I hate the thought of watching some of these for another year if there might be a young guy who should be playing over them. See it all the time. See Ceyair Wright for a perfect example. Dude was instantly our best db from his first start. Took an injury to force the issue.
You make a valid point. Who is to say that the younger players are not any good? A lot of them need an opportunity to play on Saturdays to prove themselves. Donovan Jones moved to corner from safety, replaced Hartzog and boom. Suddenly everyone realized that he's a better player than Hartzog. Gottula was forced into action at left tackle and he played light years better than Benhardt and Corcoran did when they first started out. I'm sure there are others who are just waiting for that opportunity. If we're recruiting well and actually coaching up the reserve players (either one or both of those things were missing with previous staffs), then these kids should be ready.

Trent would be perfect for Rover as he has speed and is very good at both run stopping and in pass coverage.

A decent but not particularly good set of defensive linemen. Not a single difference maker on the line. Midlevel players that will be good enough to get us to 6-6. Nebraska continues to fail to recruit top flight talent to both lines. And we will not return to a championship contending type program until we do.
We all keep getting excited over linebacker and wide receiver transfers. And we need those to be sure. But we play in the toughest conference in America. And in that conference our line talent for next year compares poorly with the teams at the top end of the conference.
People say I am too pessimistic all the time. But the past 10 years of Husker football has justified that pessimism. We are NOT a top tier program. Not yet anyway. And a huge reason for our downfall is that we have absolutely blown chunks on the offensive line in particular, but have also been wildly up and down with our defensive line play.
We are going to miss Ty and Nash. Two of our best defensive lineman since Suh. They gave us a couple years of decent line play. But we have had zero talent at rush ends which is why our defense was at its worst on third and long.

Ty is the best DLineman we've had since Suh and Crick.

It's a nice mix on the line. Young but experienced. Davis looks like a potential pass rushing DE. RVP looks like a good one as well.
