Slow Saturday, so I watched a bit of the Game of the Century on my computer.

Something that really didn't occur to me before while I was watching was how long Nebraska's players were in the early 70s. It was something that was kind of uncommon, in that a 6-4 250 OT was usually the biggest guy on your team back then. But that was a very long team for that time at most positions, including QB, RB, and on the DL. This was the beginning of TO's philosophy of bringing in tall kids who could run and building them into great football players, and it worked great for decades. The 71 team was just before the advent of modern S&C, but the frames on the field were impressive then.

1/2 of the starters were 6-3 or above and you had really long guys like Jacobson, Dutton, Monte Johnson, Austin, and Crenshaw. Pretty impressive for 1971. I think in some ways Frost tried to copy this, but his massive shortcomings pretty much made nothing out of it.
