Listed as DT, Dawson lead recruiter

A lot of credit should go to outside linebacker coach Mike Dawson. His ability to recruit the state of New Jersey is one of the more under-the-radar strengths on the coaching staff.
Go to the recruiting page for him on huskermax. Everyone from Sean Callahan, 247, OWH, all said olineman. Even the Jersey newspaper. National rivals had it wrong. Everyone else knew.

Ghaybor or however you spell it was actually the one who got him here. They went to the same hs, JEJ a year behind. Ghaybor gave his film to Frost.

Tom was extremely pissed after Frank was fired. His comment though publicly was “I thought we could have worked things out”. I keep telling people it wasn’t all about the record. There were multiple problems with the staff including Frank that Frank refused to address. Frank still viewed Pedie as the recruiting assistant intern who wasn’t qualified to give him advice.

Some of the problems were obvious alcohol abuse, one guy’s penchant for prostitutes, rumors of cocaine use, Frank’s rumored office affair with a young staffer, Carl banging a player’s wife, Bo’s erratic behavior etc.

I was told Pedie had tremendous pressure to fire Frank a year earlier from boosters but Tom talked him out of it. Yeah the record was better the next year but the staff’s personal problems were worse with the addition of the Pelini’s. I was also told that Frank and Pedie had a meeting during that last year where Pedie expressed concern about where recruiting was at and some of the staff’s issues and Frank told Pedie to “go f yourself”.

To say the least, their relationship was not good and supposedly that was the last straw. At that point Pedie asked his friend Wannstedt if he was interested and he verbally agreed to take the job. When the Dolphins got wind of it they unexpectedly extended Wannie’s contract. We all know how that ended.

That’s the story I got from a booster of substance who was friends with Pederson. Cocktails at each other’s house kind of friendship. My family member knew Frank well. Frank didnt have good things to say about the Pelinis after he was fired.

Ironically Frank built Ohio in to a respectable program largely with former Nebraska guys Burrow and Albin. His succession plan with Albin just had maybe Ohio’s best season even after losing Rourke to Indiana.

And after all of that, Tom brought Bo back as the head coach. Head scratcher, to put it mildly.

Thanks for adding that context. The story is different depending on who's perspective is being used. Petersen's perspective is going to be far, far different than others. It's also great that you threw in the "booster of substance" reference. Nothing like doubting the integrity of boosters who only contribute tens of thousands instead of six figures. What a sensitive asshole that guy was...

Solich and Albin won 23 more games at lowly Ohio than the next five successors at mighty Nebraska. And that's with the Nebraska total including the 2004 season (Solich sat out that year) and playing five more games in 2020.

Those guys at NDSU were signed before Raiola was hired. We’ve gotten the highest ranked line recruits from the Dakotas since Nash. NDSU and SDSU have made a living recruiting Minnesota and their conference foot print then developing those guys.

We used to get guys like that to walk on before that conference moved up to D1 FCS. Lately our walk ons have largely been guys without FCS offers.
I am a huge fan of Nebraska's recruiting territories that they appear to be emphasizing now. Recruit Nebraska and the Dakotas. Do a great job in KC metro. Focus strongly on Florida. Add in St. Louis metro, Texas, Hawaii, and Iowa, and that's the primary focus. I always cringed when I heard over and over again how Nebraska recruits nationally and Nebraska "must" recruit nationally. Meanwhile, we're ignoring key areas like Kansas City and filling out recruiting classes late with guys who were dropped from other schools. Reminds me of the John Garrison quote-- remembering back to his Nebraska coaching days. He was traveling in the south looking for offensive lineman, saying to himself "what the hell am I doing down here? We can find all of the offensive linemen that we need in the Midwest." And he was right.

I’m sure he’s waiting to get guys who are in the playoffs currently…

For what it’s worth, we have done quite well with OL recruiting the last few years. Not sure why people are complaining about his recruiting. I get why people complain about his coaching, but he has done well enough to get statistically the highest rated OLine class since ratings existed. I think it was the 2024 class…
Then why is Dana out there saying we desperately need to bring guys in?

When will these highly touted recruits help out? Will they ever see the field?

One 4* uncle Don signed had never pass blocked in his entire life (Brix) and got a DUI on the night before a game

Literally the biggest headline an Uncle Don recruit has made in 4 years

Not true, again. But I know that won’t stop you.

Brix didn’t get a DUI.

Gibson Pyle did and the charges have since been dismissed. (And while it was the night before a game he also wasn’t suiting up, he was injured).
Ah, thank you.

Another “highly touted” OL recruit who is nowhere close to playing

Brix and Pyle stood out to me watching a practice. I didnt know jersey numbers so I didnt know who they were, just that they were young and a backups. I looked at the roster later and saw their names, so it wasnt Like I was watching for them. Theres good potential there.

One of those two ought to be able to play outside at right tackle. Maybe even next year. Brix had more hype but that Pyle kid just seemed very physical, rough and a bit mean actually when watching some tape on him. I'd like to see kids like this compete to play next season. Don't bury them behind another transfer-- (barring an experienced standout). Another guy who needs an opportunity is that Samoan kid out of Hawaii. Give him some first team reps next spring. See what he's got. Don't let these kids get lost in the shuffle.

I may be absolutely crucified for saying this, but for all the great that Tom brought us, many of his meddlings after he quit coaching has hurt the program. Including the move to the Big Ten. They should have waited out the Texas and gang to the Pac 10 talk instead of rushing to the big ten….the big ten would have taken Nebraska had we needed to find a home had Texas etc left.

If you reread my post, I said he might be waiting for players from playoff teams. That would be in line with DH wanting to bring guys in, no?

English has been hard for you since Christmas, hasn’t it?

Not surprised you are upset. I’ll go back to Clarkeye City, right? 😆 since anyone that doesn’t blindly worship 100% of the things you do must be an Iowa fan. It makes me chuckle that you think it’s an insult.

I loved Solich as a coach. Even if all the horrible things others say about him were true. It didn’t matter to me because we were winning. Same with those players of questionable character in the 90s….who cares. We won a lot of games.

I thought you were joking.

I agree with the meddling part, I don’t think they had the Big Ten over a barrel though. When realignment continued, Had Texas came back to Big 12 with Nebraska still in that league, Texas could very well have taken that spot at some point.

That’s the problem with message boards, sometimes it can be hard to tell. That’s why, more often than not, I try to take the post at face value.

It sounds like we are in on a few highly thought of prospects, and it’s possible when the playoffs end that some more may emerge. We will see.

True but they wouldn’t have taken the entire south division with them.

For your information it was Barry Alvarez who did the lobbing for Nebraska getting in the B1G. Tom didn’t do any meddling for Nebraska, he helped in the transition for Nebraska ending the conference, which was the right decision..

Time to play some football.

I’ll be watching from Clarkeye City. It reeks here and there is meth everywhere in this state.

Frank told my family member that he warned Tom not to do it. The Hawks money over ruled better sense. Bo won. Just not enough to act like a crazy person.
