Hunt, Legrone suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules

***Offensive coordinator Troy Walters announced that wide receiver Andre Hunt and tight end Katerian Legrone had been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. Walters said both players were suspended “from all team activities” and declined to go into any further detail.

***Because both players were on the roster and practicing to start fall camp, Hunt and Legrone will count against Nebraska's scholarship limit for as long as they are still members of the team.

***Walters said he felt good about the depth in the receiver room to step up in Hunt’s absence, saying they have the ability to move a lot of guys to different spots if necessary because of how much they cross-train all three receiver spots.

***Tight ends coach Sean Beckton said with Legrone out that Chris Hickman would move up the depth chart. Beckton had a lot of good things to say about Hickman, adding that fans shouldn’t be surprised to see the freshman on the field “early” in Saturday’s season opener.

***Running backs coach Ryan Held said there were no updates on Maurice Washington’s status for Saturday’s opener.

***Offensive line coach Greg Austin said he talked with Will Farniok and told him to keep his head up and continue to work, because there was no question that the team was going to need him at some point this season.

***Austin said not only did Cam Jurgens do a great job recovering so quickly, he was also able to keep his weight up through fall camp. Austin said Jurgens currently weighed about 280 pounds, only down five pounds from the 285 he weighed going into camp.

***Another player who was able to keep his weight up through camp was quarterback Noah Vedral. He said he had always struggled with losing a bunch of weight during past fall camps, but with a better nutrition and diet program from Dave Ellis, Vedral said he’s kept his weight at his ideal 195-200 range.

***Vedral said even though this offseason wasn’t much of a competition for the starting quarterback job, he still thrived off of the battles with Adrian Martinez, Luke McCaffrey, and Andrew Bunch. He said the room prides itself on everyone’s success, so when Adrian does well, they all do well.

***Austin said it was still too early to tell whether freshman Bryce Benhart would play more than his four-game redshirt window, and a lot of it would depend on how he continues to develop on into the season.

***Quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco said he’s not surprised at all when Martinez makes some of the “wow” plays in practice with unorthodox throws because those are things the QBs would on every day before, during, and after practice.

Verduzco said he’d been teaching those “crazy throws” since the late 1970s, because he’s seen time and again that the difference in winning games and championships was the ability to make plays when the opportunity came – even if it meant breaking from the traditional rules and fundamentals of the position.

***Walters said the staff wasn’t worried about putting top guys like JD Spielman and Wan’Dale Robinson in top special teams roles because of how much NU wants to emphasize special teams. They want the best players on the field at all times, and that will include starters on both sides of the ball “setting the tone” on special teams.

***Walters said it was hard to know exactly what South Alabama would look like defensively on Saturday, so the main focus for NU’s offense was just focusing on itself. He said as long as they run the ball effectively, protect the football, make explosive plays, and limit penalties, they will have a chance to win every game.
