1788 - Maryland became the seventh state.

1789 - Fletcher Christian led the mutiny aboard the British ship Bounty against Capt. William Bligh, sending him and 18 other sailors adrift in the South Pacific.

1937 - Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was born near the desert town of Tikrit.

1945 - Former Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and his mistress, Clara Petacci, were executed as they attempted to flee the country.

1947 - Thor Heyerdahl and five others began their 101-day trek across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia aboard the balsa-wood raft, Kon-Tiki.

1952 - War with Japan officially ended as a treaty signed in San Francisco the year before took effect.

1952 - Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower resigned as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe; he was succeeded by Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway.

1958 - The United States conducted the first of 35 nuclear test explosions in the Pacific Proving Ground as part of Operation Hardtack I.

1958 - Vice President Richard Nixon and his wife Pat began a goodwill tour of Latin America that was marred by hostile mobs in Lima, Peru and Caracas, Venezuela.

1980 - Secretary of State Cyrus Vance resigned over his opposition to the failed rescue mission aimed at freeing American hostages in Iran.

1986 - The Soviet Union informed the world of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl.

1988 - A flight attendant was killed and more than 60 people were injured when part of the roof of an Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 tore off during a flight from Hilo to Honolulu.

1990 - The musical "A Chorus Line" closed after 6,137 performances on Broadway.

1992 - The Department of Agriculture unveiled its first food pyramid.

1994 - Former CIA official Aldrich Ames, who had betrayed U.S. secrets to the Soviet Union and then Russia, pleaded guilty to espionage and tax evasion and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

1996 - President Bill Clinton gave 4 1/2 hours of videotaped testimony as a defense witness in the criminal trial of his former Whitewater business partners.

2001 - California businessman Dennis Tito becomes the world's first space tourist, blasting off aboard a Russian rocket to the International Space Station.

2003 - Apple Computer Inc. launched the iTunes store.

2004 - The Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal first comes to light when graphic photos of U.S. soldiers physically abusing and humiliating Iraqi prisoners were shown on the CBS program "60 Minutes II".

2004 - Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched from the Republican to the Democratic Party.

2010 - Coast Guard Rear Adm. Mary Landry said a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was worse than officials had believed, and that the federal government was offering to help industry giant BP contain the slick threatening the U.S. shoreline.

2011 - President Barack Obama reshuffled his national security team, with CIA Director Leon Panetta succeeding Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Gen. David Petraeus replacing Panetta at the CIA.

2011 - Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and raping Jaycee Dugard, who was abducted in California in 1991 at age 11 and rescued 18 years later. (The Garridos were sentenced to up to life in prison.)

2015 - Urging Americans to “do some soul-searching,” President Barack Obama expressed deep frustration over recurring black deaths at the hands of police, rioters who responded with senseless violence and a society that would only “feign concern” without addressing the root causes.

2019 - "Avengers: Endgame" shattered the record for biggest opening weekend with an estimated $350 million in ticket sales domestically and $1.2 billion globally.

2020 - President Donald Trump signed an executive order under the Defense Production Act to keep meat packing plants open; it classified meat processing as critical infrastructure.

1961 - The NFL chose Canton, Ohio as the home for the Professional Football Hall of Fame.

1966 - The Boston Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games to win the NBA championship.

1967 - Heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali refused to be inducted into the U.S. Army on religious grounds; he was then stripped of his championship.

1971 - Hank Aaron hit his 600th career home run.

1985 - Billy Martin was named manager of the New York Yankees for the fourth time.

1985 - Fernando Valenzuela sets a major league record with 41 consecutive scoreless innings pitched to begin a season.

1987 - The NBA announced expansion teams for Charlotte and Miami, to begin competition in 1988 and Minneapolis and Orlando to begin play in 1989.

1987 - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

1987 - The following Huskers were selected in the 1987 NFL Draft: DT - Danny Noonan (1st round, 12th pick, Dallas Cowboys); CB - Brian Davis (2nd round, Washington Redskins); LB - Marc Munford (4th round, Denver Broncos); and OG - Stan Parker (9th round, New York Giants).

1988 - The Baltimore Orioles lost their 21st consecutive game to set a new major league record for worst start to a season (0-21).

1993 - Dale Hunter (Washington Capitals) executed a blindside check on Pierre Turgeon (New York Islanders). On May 4 Hunter was given a 21 game suspension.

2003 - At age 33 years, 13 days, Andre Agassi becomes the oldest player to become the world's top-ranked male tennis player in the history of the ATP rankings.

2007 - The Oakland Raiders select LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the first pick in the NFL Draft.

2007 - The following Huskers were selected in the 2007 NFL Draft: DE - Adam Carriker (1st round, 13th pick, St. Louis Rams); RB - Brandon Jackson (2nd round, Green Bay Packers); LB - Stewart Bradley (3rd round, Philadelphia Eagles) and DE - Jay Moore (4th round, San Francisco 49ers).

2011 - The Carolina Panthers select Auburn quarterback Cam Newton with the first pick in the NFL Draft.
