Getting paid not to work...awesome!
Because they can...I know it's a free market and if a guy can command that kind of deal, and someone pays it, all good. But I wonder when the market begins to lash back and no longer offer these astronomical deals for 7 years+.
I mean, one year at 3 - 5 mil puts you in the extreme elite in the world... why in the world must someone commit to paying this for 7 years when there is no guarantee of success?
I wasn't aware that 10 year deals were all that common. In fact, Charlie's deal is the only one I can remember. So, I don't think the market needs to "lash back" on something that was unique and basically unheard of before and since.I know it's a free market and if a guy can command that kind of deal, and someone pays it, all good. Back many, many years ago Iowa State went through 3 head basketball coaches in the something like 5 years. Now back in the stone age when I was at NU coaches salaries were not sky high like they are today. ISU was paying the 3 fired coaches a combined total of $400,000 a year. A friend got a brilliant idea and sent a letter to the ISU AD stating that he, I, and another friend would be happy to not coach ISU basketball for a measly $200,000 a year, thus saving ISU $200,000 a year. For some reason he never got a response from the ISU AD.
He obviously worked the buffet time and time again. Not sure he worked when he was there.
