Wow. ND still paying Weis more than Kelly

I know it's a free market and if a guy can command that kind of deal, and someone pays it, all good. But I wonder when the market begins to lash back and no longer offer these astronomical deals for 7 years+.

I mean, one year at 3 - 5 mil puts you in the extreme elite in the world... why in the world must someone commit to paying this for 7 years when there is no guarantee of success?

I wasn't aware that 10 year deals were all that common. In fact, Charlie's deal is the only one I can remember. So, I don't think the market needs to "lash back" on something that was unique and basically unheard of before and since.

Can't believe they extended his deal when he was at ND. Smart on Weis's end, incredibly naive by the ND Admin's. I think KU is finally done paying him too (but not 100% sure).

Maybe the "lash back" is more so in not paying these coaches such high comped deals to begin with. Obviously there's a lot other things besides coaching that they are responsible for, but if they aren't one of the 15-20 college schools that make money in sports, it's simply not feasible long-term to give out these type of deals.

I think Iowa extended Ferentz in 2010 thru 2020. When he was on the hot seat, his contract was A hot topic.

Who is the baseball player that played a while ago and his contract had him getting paid for the next 100 years or something stupid like that?

Back many, many years ago Iowa State went through 3 head basketball coaches in the something like 5 years. Now back in the stone age when I was at NU coaches salaries were not sky high like they are today. ISU was paying the 3 fired coaches a combined total of $400,000 a year. A friend got a brilliant idea and sent a letter to the ISU AD stating that he, I, and another friend would be happy to not coach ISU basketball for a measly $200,000 a year, thus saving ISU $200,000 a year. For some reason he never got a response from the ISU AD.

You either have the wrong school or your numbers are WAY off. ISU paid Johnny Orr a whopping $45,000 to be their coach in 1980, they were actually calling for his assistant Bill Frieder. When Orr, who Michigan was paying $33,000 as their head basketball coach at the time heard the salary they were willing to pay his assistant he took the job himself! The only other time ISU had 3 coaches in a short span like was after Orr when salaries had already escalated past 7 figures. Maybe they were paying the 3 a combined 100k and you and your buddy offered 50k?

Another interesting fact about that hire, in March of 1980 before they hired Orr, ISU's top candidate was a young Coach K, who was ready to accept the ISU job, until Duke came calling when their coach Bill Foster decided he wanted to leave Duke to take the South Carolina job at the last minute.
