In 2014, Oregon State, with a future NFL quarterback, went 5-7. That talented QB, Sean Mannion, averaged 24 completions, 38 attempts and 264 yards per game passing.
In 2017, Nebraska, with a future NFL quarterback, is 4-4. That talented QB, Tanner Lee, averages 21 completions, 36 attempts and 267 yards per game passing.
This Riley/Langsdorf style of play can be exciting to watch, it can win some games (like last night) and it can certainly put QBs and WRs in the NFL. But unless you simply have more talent than everyone else (Carroll-era USC, Alabama before Hurts), this pro-style pocket passing system is not generally sustainable for championships in college football.
