Wish we were playing Penn State Friday

No way. Back then Nebraska or OU were playing for Natty’s or Conference Championships. The Nebraska vs Iowa game is no where near that level.

And it never will be at that level. Almost a zero % chance there will ever be a year where Iowa and Nebraska are both in any kind of Championship hunt. Can't say the same about Penn State.

the thing about iowa is, it sucks.
and colorado blows.
thats why the wind goes from west to east across Nebraska

Iowa has 3 rivalry games. They could drop us we don’t need one.
Says who? Penn St and Maryland still have played over 40 some games against one another, Nebraska and herky’s have played 54 times.
They may someday not have them play Wisconsin every year but as long as Wisconsin and Minnesota play at the end of the season we will continue to play them on Black Friday.

You and another want something that is never going to happen..

I don't think we're having the same discussion here.

Probably never going to happen? Sure, I agree with you there.

It's a game that's based on geography that we've been told to call a rivalry? Yeah, you're right there too.

There are a few other teams in the B1G that have geography based games at the end of the year that either are a real rivalry or they have been told to call it a rivalry? Yep.

Doesn't change the fact that there is a lot more to a real rivalry than geography and pretending it is one.

Iowa is a perennial middle of the pack team. It's like we're validating them to even call it a rivalry and diminishing us in the process, despite the recent outcomes. Playing down to your competition type of thing. I mean, just look at their other middle of the pack rivals. Talk about which of these teams is not like the other. Plus a large portion of Iowa fans don't even consider us their main rival. Kind of embarrassing if you ask me.

As far as Penn State, I just think that would have had a better chance at developing into a real rivalry. Much more similar football programs. We're a blue blood, they're a fringe blue blood. Both late adds to the B1G and they don't have a real rival either (trust me, it's not Maryland, despite them having close geography and playing at the end of the year). Throw in the Rhule factor now and I think it would be a blast. All the top tier programs in the B1G's real rivalries are already taken, except us and Penn State. Wish that would have happened, that's all.

I can meet you halfway for sure, I disagree about them not thinking we’re not a rivalry.. When AD says he has to assess our program by barely beating them in OVT and there FG kicker blowing a kiss to the Husker sideline in 2019 there has been bad blood built up between the coaching staffs and players from both teams.

I know for a fact that Minnesota and the Clarkeyes hate one another too.

I get the blue blood and and both programs feel they were cheated out of winning national title..

I didn't say they don't think we're a rival. I said their main rival.

That said, meeting in the middle works for me. I'm right, and you're not wrong...you're just less right. Happy Thanksgiving!

PSU has no protected rival for whatever reason. The Nits wish it was Ohio State but the Bucks are the hot girl who never calls back. Rutgers and Maryland want to be PSUs rival but aren't on the same level most of the time and aren't real rivals.

I'm biased living in PA with Penn State fans but I'd absolutely love a yearly Nebraska-PSU grudge match. Two traditional blue bloods with a bit of history having an annual Black Friday smackdown sounds like a lot of fun to me. And we could always argue about 1982 and 1994 as well, lol

Spot on. Except the PSU being a blue blood part. They’re not. They’re blue blood adjacent though. Much more so than Iowa

We can’t live in the past… but you want to? Yeah, I ****ing hate Iowa and want to beat their ass. It feels exactly the same as OU used to.

Sorta, accept I have zero respect for iowa. Hated OU but also had respect for their program. iowa is just gross, I feel like a need to take a shower after watching them play. Ew…

Feels to me like a lot of Husker fans think we're above Iowa so they are reluctant to call them a rivalry. 25 years ago i'd have agreed with that train of thought...but now? Not so much.

True, I’ll never give an iowa fag the satisfaction. I’ll never openly acknowledge this as a rivalry, regardless of situation or context.

South Carolina vs Clemson
Florida vs Florida State
Texas vs Texas A&M
Michigan vs Ohio State
USC vs Notre Dame
Michigan State vs Penn State
Indiana vs Purdue
Alabama vs Auburn
Ole Miss vs Mississippi State
Georgia vs Georgia Tech
Vanderbilt vs Tennessee
Minnesota vs Wisconsin

Most of these are either storied rivalries with years upon years between blue bloods like Ohio State vs Michigan, or Notre Dame vs USC. Others are key in State rivalries that are for State bragging rights. But all of them excluding FSU vs Florida will impact the playoff.

Nebraska doesn't have an instate rival, they don't have a Blueblood that considers Nebraska their main rival either. Closest thing was probably Colorado, but Colorado isn't a Blueblood either. So Iowa is the game, it's kind of like pairing Penn State with Michigan State. Penn State would rather have Ohio State and Michigan State would rather have Michigan. But that's just the way it goes. Miami would rather be playing FSU other than Syracuse, but FSU vs Florida is bigger.

I always thought Nebraska and Wisconsin should be the game, that would allow Iowa to play Minnesota in a much more heated historical matchup. But Minnesota vs Wisconsin is older.

In the B1G , there are only three schools that don't have a major instate program other than themselves. Heck they don't have another D1 program. Those three are Wisconsin, Nebraska and Minnesota.

When a rival fan base accuses us of living in the past...I present this thread as proof they're right.
IMO it has nothing to do with either team’s national or even conference standing

Rivalries occur organically, this one is contrived

The vast, vast majority of NU fans I talk to at least simply don’t care about iowa

and I’m sure it’s vice versa since they also have actual rivals they play every year too (Iowa st, minn)

There are different levels of rivalries..nobody is trying to convince anyone its Ohio State - Michigan...but it is a rivalry and there ain't a close second.

UCLA is my preferred Black Friday opponent
Either them, Penn St. or Washington would have been my vote. Nebraska has more history with them than with Iowa.

But those ships have long sailed, and Washington always ends the season with Oregon.

If NU ever gets good again, maybe they’ll earn a better Black Friday opponent.

This entire thread is the living embodiment of “wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which hand has something in it.” We all agree Iowa is shit, but it’s what we have and it ain’t changing.

Yeah, well this^ post is the living embodiment of anyone arguing for it being a real rivalry that your only stance is, "we'll take what the B1G gives us and we'll like it." That doesn't make it a rivalry.

So you think we should be relegated to being the third tier contrived "rival" of a perennial middle of the pack team? That's how far you think we've fallen? Good lord, man! I'm about as realistic as they come with regard to how much we've sucked lately, but I'm not willing to just roll over and take that. What a defeatist, loser, cuckold mentality. Have a little more pride. Jeezus

Can I make the argument that those of you arguing against Iowa being our rival are correct in the sense that one of the two teams involved in the discussion has to actually win a game in said rivalry once and a while, in order for it to be a real rivalry? So maybe eveeyone saying it isn't a rivalry is right...?

Setting that aside, some of the posts in this thread are exactly how rivals talk about each other..is any other team talked about more on this board, than the team we keep pretending is beneath us? ..inquiring minds want to know!!!

Regardless of your reasoning or which side you come down on, the fact that we're even having this discussion tells you everything you need to know. If it were a real rivalry, there would be no doubt. Therefor, it clearly is not.

Absolutely not. I think Iowa fans should have more pride than that. And besides, UNL isn't close to a middle of the pack team. They've been a bottom feeder for many years now.
