She's a Doctor. Hospital she works in is trying to deal with the full panic mode going on in our society.

Staff around the area are very upset with the media. UNMC docs are as well.

Best thing she heard from a regional specialist was this:

"The best way to get rid of the virus is to have the media shut up about it for two weeks."

It's amazing the differences between this and the swine flu response. Wonder why...

Maybe because tRrump had his thumb up his ass until two days ago.

Yeah it's Trump's fault. Don't be stupid.

That is absolutely false and really stupid. Yeah people need to be calm but the threat is real and unfortunately we have a bunch of dumbasses who refuse to even get a flu shot in this country so they have to have the shit scared out of them to get them to act reasonably responsible. My wife is a pulmonologist to be exact and she does critical care. Yes she's sick of the hysteria from people in our very low risk area (not Omaha) but I've heard some horribly irresponsible things come from public health officials in Omaha. At some point there will be community spread of the virus in Omaha even though it hasn't been documented yet. It's inevitable. Ohio is estiimating already that 1% of their population is already incubating that virus. Tomorrow that will be 2. The day after 4%. This is not a death sentence for young healthy adults but for our large population of people with other health issues, it might as well be.

Well, see? Reality is complex. You are 100% right about this one.

If someone wants to take the time to check the accuracy of this. I was told "uptown" today that every potential pandemic we've had has happened on an "even" numbered year. Swine, avian, SARS etc. Man can't wait for 2021!!

The media is one thing, however, the powers that be in Omaha shutting down schools indefinitely, possibly past next week, is another thing. I have to think that those decision makers are being informed by the CDC or the local County Health Department
So the doctors and the local/national health authorities don't see eye to eye?

The difference is this flu virus today comes during a election year and the anti-Trump people are in FULL BEAST MODE. The swine-flu outbreak happened in '09 ( I believe) ...Obama was already in office and this country was out of campaign mode, particularly the media. Yes, the coronavirus has been politicized.

Dingle, he was using a figure of speech to describe how the media is only making it worse. I don't know how you could have thought he literally thought shutting down the media would end the virus. C'mon, you're better than that.

The problem for schools and any business is that they have large numbers of teachers and support staff who fall in higher risk categories. All it takes is one immunocompromised kid to die from COVID-19 or one teacher and all hell breaks out. It is also true that large gatherings of young people who almost ubiquitously have horrible personal hygiene habits is the largest AMPLIFIER of viral infections known to man.

No, that is not a problem at all. Don't create a straw man.
We can have a different debate about shutting down schools for the moment.
It's entirely different to create mass hysteria and cancel things months away which only leads to more economic woes, societal panic, hospital shortages, etc. etc. Hospitals are facing shortages of stupid stuff becuase the media is telling everyone we're all gonna die when 40 people have died thus far.

I wish they took the same voice they did back during the swine flu days when we didn't declare state of emergency until after 1,000 people died, 18,000 people were hospitalized, and over 300,000 people had contracted the virus. And the media didn't go off the wall absurd panic mode, leading to everything being cancelled as quickly as possible even AFTER the state of emergency was declared.

I'm very familiar with the healthcare climate in Omaha as well and don't know of any Drs. that are saying that the best way to get rid of the virus is have the media shut up about it or any that are complaining about the media . What I do hear them saying is... error on the side of being overly cautious....do as much as we can to make sure that the virus doesn't peak all at once so that it doesn't overwhelm the hospitals...take proactive steps now to lessen the severity.

Do you have any idea why that is?

He chose his words very poorly then and that matters at times like these. Somewhere out there are numbskulls who will take those words to heart and believe it's a hoax like the Jazz player and end up infecting dozens of at risk people.

That's all fine and dandy....BUT WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO WIPE MY ASS WITH????
I get the joke, but I have good news.
People will not use more toilet paper than usual, even if they are buying more to stock up.
There won't be a shortage for long, because people who stocked up won't keep stocking up since they already have that month of reserves. They'll go back to normal buying habits.
Butt wipe is going to be back on the shelves collecting dust in no time, folks! Until then...

BUT SOON??

What is happening now is an effort to flatten the curve. If you haven't read up on what that is and why it's important, you need to.
This isn't what's being discussed. So GTFO with your same old tired crap.

You can start your own thread about flattening the curve by cancelling things three months away that can easily be cancelled later on.

Actually it's exactly what is being discussed right now.

I am terrified, we are about to all get slammed with a tsunami. As a physician, I feel my duty to speak out what this looks like from my perspective. Actually, I really don’t worry too much about myself or loved ones dying from this illness, as 80% of COVID19 is a mild disease. But I know our healthcare infrastructure can not withstand this sudden surge. I know my geriatric and chronically ill patients are most at risk of dying.
COVID19 is much more infectious and lethal than the flu, a percent more or less may not seem like much, but when multiplied into community numbers, that is when is gets scary. The reproductive number – the number of secondary infections generated from one infected individual – is reported to be between 2-3.2, the flu is 1.3. The fatality rate for COVID19 is 2-3.5%, the flu is <0.1%. Additionally, COVID19 hospitalizations are lasting days longer than flu hospitalizations.
Population of Lincoln 287,500
community attack rate 10%= 28,750 sick
Cases requiring hospitalization 10%=2,875
cases requiring ICU 1%=287
case fatality 3.5%= 1,006

Guess how many hospital beds Lincoln has? 1,100. Not even close to the low estimate of 2,875. Plus those bed are already occupied by sick patients. It very likely will be 3X this number!!!Other countries are seeing over 30% community attack rate. We cannot handle this surge!
China was extremely aggressive about testing and isolating in Wuhan and providing healthcare providers with the proper masks, gowns, etc. We are way under diagnosed due to narrow indications for testing and very limited supply of tests. I am worried our numbers will be worse than China.
Healthcare workers do not have the supplies needed: N95 masks, surgical masks, gowns, face shields. What happens when a dialysis nurse works with mild symptoms, and later is diagnosed. She may have exposed 2-3 days of dialysis patients, so 20-30 dialysis patients suddenly need quarantine and continue to receive dialysis. Where will the heart attack patient go who needs the ICU? Who will care for my patient admitted with a hip fracture?
If my staff gets sick (remember our lack of N95 masks) who will care for my high risk elderly patients?
The stories from physicians in China and Italy are terrifying and heart breaking.
What can we do? We don’t have a treatment or a vaccine. I need the public to act quickly. We need to slow the rate of transmission so we don’t have a quick peak in cases. If we can ‘flatten the curve’, our infrastructure maybe able to handle this crisis. The only way is public health measures... stay home. Cancel the basketball games, concerts, group gatherings. Follow social isolation, limit travel. Absolutely follow any quarantine. Wash your hands. Push our government to get more testing and masks, right now! If we can’t mitigate the cases and slow the surge, in one month we will need the National Guard setting up temporary hospital beds in Pershing.

So what WAS the point of this thread? You literally stated nothing that was new information. The only new thing your provided was the last sentence of the OP, when you whined that people were being mean to poor widdle Buttercup.

Here's a little life advice: turn off the Fox News propaganda channel, because it is designed to make you angry. That's why every story involves conspiracies about the deep state, fake news media, or some other baloney.

Yeah, you know the whole post was all about this one sentence.

Ask me how much I have watched fox news in the past month. Go ahead. Your talking point won't work with me, buddy. The reason you even said that proves you are 100% political about this. So ask away

The point of this thread is that the media has made this worse.

No one ever said we shouldn't be concerned or take precautions, etc.

The point is that cancelling events 6 weeks from now is probably an over reaction. Hoarding TP and hand sanitizer is an over reaction. Causing people who need things NOW to not be able to get them because you're afraid you might run out 3 weeks from now is causing harm to some citizens who may be at higher risk than yourself. THAT is the point. Yes the measures being taken now are being taken to try to slow the virus down so that we don't overwhelm our medical systems and that is what is meant by "flatten the curve". The down side of that is that it drags things out longer. It also MIGHT decrease dramatically the number of fatalities over the long haul just due to increasing our ability to care for critically ill people. IF you're sure you're going to get it, now is the time to get it.

Yeah, you know the whole post was all about this one sentence.
You're right. There's no way any of the same people who have been trying to out the prez for the past 3+ years would ever try to exploit any bad news for that reason. They are all very, very reasonable.

All except for that horrible fox news...which any idiot who disagrees with my hysteria-panic status quo must be watching.

Six weeks? How about 9 weeks? But you are right overall.

People are getting and going to get fired and are going to lose a lot that might not even be necessary, we have no idea yet. I have no idea why my position would seem crazy.

Everyone assumes you have to be in one of two camps:
1. This is just the flu you idiots
2. CANCEL EVERYTHING NOW OR YOU DON'T HAVE A HEART...WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE

There IS and SHOULD BE a middle ground here.
