Why doesn’t Tom Osborne have influence over Big Ten?

Osborne is above the influence....

the big ten is a nationally running joke and no member gets it

most prestigious athletic conference by what standard? certainly isn't measured by anything on the field/court.
There is either a very heavy emphasis on volleyball and wrestling, or this is just something the Big Ten gets to claim year after year without any supporting evidence.

And Barry Alvarez does.

That said Nebraska is lucky to be part of the most prestigious athletic conference in collegiate sports. The Nebraska brand weakens without its Big Ten membership.

I have to admit, the foresight / planning by the BIG conference leadership and elites is most impressive.

They're visionaries.

Brilliant academic elites.

Examples of how careful planning -- married to common sense -- allows them to lead from in front, not from behind.

They make sure that all points of view are considered before voting not voting arriving at their decisions, as evidenced in the following article, which states that "athletic directors and senior women administrators " are the ones holding the keys to the conference votes not votes decisions.

https://www.espn.com/college-footba...5/sources-big-ten-expected-change-6-game-rule

If the other conferences had similar brilliant elites running it, they wouldn't all be in the mess they are in for this football season.

because they are. Even the Wall St Journal wrote about how other conferences were waiting for the Big Ten to make a ruling. It’s the biggest most powerful conference.
hilarious.

B1G made a ruling, then SEC/ACC/Big12 all said what the B1G does means nothing, committed to playing and have made the B1G look like the know-nothing blowhards they are.

"Because they are."

Well then, that certainly settles it.

Funny that among the other major conferences that were waiting on pins and needles for the Big Ten to decide on fall sports, there was only one (Pac-12) that followed the guidance of the self-proclaimed most prestigious conference in all the land.

because they are.

Do you find it odd that the most prestigious conference, with the most brilliant elites, has been the one scrambling throughout the season? Including the embarrassing reversals this week of the rules those same people were warned about -- yet put in place anyway -- just a couple short months ago?

I think you forgot to include thumb wrestling, cornholing, and bowling.

The Big 10 is an absolute joke. No conference has had more embarrassing off the field scandals then the almighty Big 10. No conference has mishandled the Covid 19 season worse than the Big 10. In this conference there is one set of rules for Ohio State and another set of rules for Nebraska. I repeat, the Big 10 is a joke!

Things sure have changed regarding our excitement about being in the B1G...I remember when we laughed at everyone on our way out the B12 door and especially Missouri....we were soooo proud and happy to get an invite and felt so good about ourselves. Just weird reading all the posts now about what a bad move it was./is .

This conference hasn't always been run like a clown car being driven by several blind drunks all simultaneously grabbing for the wheel. That's a relatively new phenomenon.

To be clear, I don't think Nebraska going to the Big Ten was a bad move at all. And, I will be the first to say that Nebraska men's athletics has crapped the bed in recent years and contributed little or nothing to the conference to date. But I find the Big Ten's relentless insistence that it is the top athletic conference in America to be tiresome and nauseating. It carrys about as much weight as Bill Walton blathering on and on about the Pac-12 being The Conference of Champions.

Barry Alvarez also is an ACTIVE AD as well as having coached in the B1G for years before that. He's considered the "dean" of the B1G AD's. That's why he has a lot of influence. When Barry retires though he'll lose much of that influence.

And despite Barry having such a B1G history, he still does NOT have quite the influence of the OSU AD whoever that is at any point in time. The OSU AD gets his power from the school he represents so he could be a junior AD and still wield more power/influence than any other AD.

TO is a “has been” in another conference not even close to the quality of today’s B1G.
quality?

between 1990-2000 (11 seasons), the Big 12 won 5 national titles by 3 different teams.

starting now, you would have to go back to 1982 to find 5 B1G national champs, and one was split with a Big 12 team. that's 38 years!!!!

the B1G has a very serious superiority complex. there is quite literally nothing that backs up its claims of being a great conference. not one single thing.

'today's B1G', without ohio state, is a lot closer to the AAC/Conf USA than the Big 12. moron

It's obvious the original poster is not familiar with T.O. T.O. was not a micro manager and when he retired he was very careful about not sticking his nose into things or getting in the way. If he was invited to do something he would do it but that was it. Now, T.O is enjoying retirement.

TO "OWNED" the Big 10 during his time as head coach Nebraska went 19-3 against this over rated conference. BTW he also went 11-1-1 against the SEC.
Current clout in the B1G decision making process has nothing to do with historical wins against the conference by a long retired coach.

TO is one of the main reasons Neb is in this conference. The conference that so many of you despise.

Thanks a lot Tom

B1G screwed up for 2 reasons IMO:

1) When Jim Delany was commissioner the Big 10 was one voice and the presidents/ADs etc... knew not to make public comments until Delany did. Delany also had the ability to look a few moves down the road. They replaced Delany with Warren who had 0 experience in running an athletic conference. Waren did check 1 box when he was hired so the Big Ten presidents could all feel good about how forward thinking they were

2) Politics came into play. Liberal governors in Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, New Jersey and Pennsylvania were pressing the presidents to shut down and the presidents folded. It wasn't until the pressure started mounting from the public, players as well as Nebraska and OSU that the Big 10 presidents finally relented. Had Delany been in charge I don't think #2 happens.

They dont even have 5 in that time frame of 1982. They have 3. Penn State didnt join the crap 10 until 1990 so they dint even get to claim those 2 titles. B1G has never been an elite conference. Just a money conference due to the big TV markets they cover along with their large student and alumni base. Their football teams have always beat each other up and screwed themselves out of titles.

because dr. tom is 250 years old and deserves a break from the rat race

Aren't you an Iowa fan?? LMFAO at your "legends" Hayden Fry (.560 winning percentage) and Kirk Ferentz (.616 :D), what a joke those two are. Calling them "good" is like giving a Special Olympics participation trophy. In what world is either one of those considered to be more than a fairly serviceable college coach?

Mediocrity, that is the Iowa Way!

I forget who said this but somebody said that there was 2 types of league leadership that you could have and you could have a mix where the needle could swing to one of these types or somewhere in between.

You could have the Big 12 model where you have a commissioner who is mostly just a coordinator&spokesperson. Decisions are made by the schools per voter and per influence.

The 2nd model is too have a strong commissioner who actually has the power to make decisions ala a presidential type role.

I think the B1G use to lean heavily towards the 2nd model with some influence in the mix by the brand teams in the league. With a new commissioner I think the B1G has swung the other way? Not sure. It's a circus.

That may be true after coaching, but as a coach he probably did micromanage a lot. There's nothing wrong with that imo.

Nope. It's one of the things that the assistant coaches liked about Tom. Mcbride used to comment about that trust.

Here are some of Osborne's Leadership Principles from one of his books. He is not a micromanager.

• Be a servant leader. Sacrifice yourself for the benefit of others.
• Accentuate the positive and empower those around you.
• Focus on your values and principles and stay true to them.
• Bring a sense of teamwork through loyalty and unity.
• Do whatever you can to help make a difference in the world.
• Whenever you deal with adversity, learn from the experience.
• Focus on what matters most: character, principles and process.
• Mentor someone and leave a legacy of spirit and perseverance.
