Why did Tanner Lee transfer?

I imagine that this has been discussed but I'm wondering why Tanner Lee transferred from Tulane?

The article mentioned that he's started 19 games over the past two years. I'm assuming that someone else came in (or was around) that beat him out?

I believe it was because Tulane was changing their offensive scheme away from statue quarterbacks.

Willie Fritz is the new head coach at Tulane. He runs the Spread Option. Ironically, AJ Bush would be the ideal QB for Tulane.

Not to put you on the spot; well ok, any opinion on AJ at this point in fall practice ? Can he beat out Fyfe; or even situational, since he ran pretty wild through the D in the Spring? Thanks

He is going to be the starter in 2017 and would be this year if he were eligible

Uhhhhh no. Tanner is a lifetime 50% passer that looks great and has a cannon for an arm but hasn't had any success at the D1 level.

The dude who was 13-40 last year against UCONN for 106 yards and 2 picks just wasn't going to beat out TA this year. He could very well be the starter next year and his presence is great for competition/depth but I am hoping POB beats him out.

We got some good news today but man let's all pump the brakes a little.

One word: Tulane.

Now two words: no line.

Those three words will give you 13-40 against anybody.

Maybe. But while his supporting cast gets better his competition does too.

Again, I'm happy he got the extra year but anointing him the starting QB next year is a stretch. Saying he would've started this year is donkey brained.

May the best man win the starting job in 2017 whoever that turns out to be. But whatever happens, it just way too early to declare a starter for 2017. We have the rest of 2016 fall camp to get through, 2017 spring practice and 2017 fall camp. Gebbia will be here for spring and Lee and POB are here now so they all have a great opportunity to learn the offense.

Bush is still here? Benning said he was gone in the Spring. Weird

Watched him a little at Tulane and was not impressed but maybe it was what was surrounding him and he will improve while in Lincoln

and Lee was granted a 6th year of eligibility I see (which I personally thought wouldn't happen) so we will have 2 young pass-first QB's and an experienced pass-first QB in 2018 as well.

??? That cannot be granted until after the 5th year if I am not mistaken.

Agreed - and quite an accomplishment to be an over 50% passer, when you have to factor the games in like this. Actually gives me even more hope where he is concerned. Even many of these " pass first ", qb's will be able to run. They are talent.
........ Many qb run plays effectively give you a numerical advantage if designed correctly. The new coaches are pretty excited about parts of what they inherited; will keep some no matter the starter. You don't have to have a TA to break one; a qb run game helping to move the chains is also great.

Tulane's schedule was no cakewalk last year. They play in the same conference as Cinci, E. Carolina, Temple, Houston, Memphis etc. plus they pretty regularly "play up" against power 5 schools. I can't find their schedule, but Lee has played some pretty talented competition. His offensive line was TERRIBLE so it will be fun to see what he can do with maybe some better protection.

I'm going to set my expectations for Tanner Lee pretty low. My only condition is he doesn't end up like that other transfer QB and ruin the best game ever, NCAA. I blame you Sam.

But I really do think Tanner can excel under Riley. POB/Gebbia groom the future, and think they excel too, hopefully. GBR

YES; it could actually be possible to have more than one good qb at once. And the coaches stomachs can recover; as directions get followed and such. N has suffered in some way, for a ridiculous period of time. Causes about half the unnecessary snipping on here; amongst a talented group. GBR The coaches are doing all they can to add the talent; and Coach even grabbed Mannings coach ! I know; but relax, it is what it is. !!!

The most important part of him getting a second year is having a returning QB with experience for the 2018 season having to face Michigan,Wisconsin,Northwestern,Ohio St and Iowa all on the road.

If Riley wants to make some noise in his 4th year by winning the B1G and finishing in the top 15 in the country this could be a blessing.

Yea you would think most players would want their likeness in a game because they may never be heard from again.

As opposed to what? A handoff first QB?

A run-first QB who is better at running the ball than passing it accurately or a running back playing quarterback.

TMart was an amazing runner (when he was healthy) and Armstrong is too.
Their passing left much to be desired at times and they were more of a dual-threat QB vs a pro-style QB (not a statue, but an accurate passer).

Many dual-threat QBs are more of a single threat as they can run fast but their passing accuracy sucks.

I hate seeing our WR's wide open and the QB can't throw it to them.
How many times have we had someone wide open and the QB whiffs on the throw and the ball hits the ground.

Maybe this is in reference to TA being a turnover first QB.

lol that too!
I just hope all of the future QBs can keep the INTs low.

Don't be surprised if Riley and make some noise this year.

if Lee is ever our best QB, we're in big time trouble.
Based on... His stats he accumulated with an injured finger on his throwing hand? The concussion that affected him? Was it when the offense changed around him?

Or is it something else? Curious to know why you think we are in big trouble.

Its his lightning quick release he keeps showing since here; and the comments he rockets it out of there; and it goes to where its supposed to be. The biggest concern is these comments are coming from coaches who are going on two years since coaching a Pro qb; they may have not adjusted to the aura of the B1G yet.

based on his poor decision making when pressured and the fact that I can't think of one guy who was ineffective against non Power 5 teams, transferred, and then all of the sudden became effective against Power 5 teams.

From what I have read, the coaches seem pretty high on him... Shouldn't that make a difference?

I generally don't believe a word that comes out of the mouth of coaches. They too often have some other agenda, which is understandable. I go by what I see in actual games and tanner Lee was not good. Now maybe he was hurt, maybe Tulanes coaches sucked, maybe he has improved, maybe some combo of all of those. But maybe (more likely in my opinion) he wasn't good and he will continue to be not good going forward. If he's the starter next year, I'll hope to hell I'm wrong.

No; your posts are highly accurate and seem to be well informed - but this time; besides recruiting him, the coaches have only had Spring ball, summer workout feedback and observations of just a week or so of fall camp. A similar thing happened when the Russell Wilson guy was told to go, when a new coach came in. Some here would say, he wasn't much in his B1G transfer effort; And it was luck to get the visit in Seattle. We have internet opinion here; also based on a qb who initially had some East coast career action. GBR
These coaches turned around a decimated LB core in a 1-2 year period here;; basically identifying size speed and brightness and coaching it up. Why would HCMR recruit Mannings qb coach away from him; when many know you can't do that with qb's.
