Why did Bill Callahan fail at Nebraska?

Offense was horrid. Ran up numbers against bad teams and ran 3 yard outs on good teams to limit the ass kicking. Always knew to watch pass to Fullback in the flat at the 3 us line and middle screen on 3rd and long. Defense speaks for itself but HE was not effective, either.
Its weird how people somehow remember Callahan having a good offense. It was a joke from day 1 and the only time it was impressive was against KSU when Ganz finally took over. No wonder he lost the team.
Both statements can be true. You're comparing apples to oranges AND Frost didn't coach up that first year team enough to have a winning season.
While I agree Callahan would have bolted to the NFL the first chance he got, if given more time and if he had a better DC he would have had a lot of success here. Watching Joe Ganz in his offense was a thing of beauty!
Callahan’s football IQ was way higher than Pelini or Riley. Nice guy Riley is just a .500 coach. As many pointed out without Callahan’s recruits Pelini was exposed. Maybe not record-wise but Pelini was the worst Nebraska coach in the modern era. Definitely Callahan could have at least gotten similar records and maybe Riley during the same era as Pelini.
And yet Joe only started after Keller went down, even though the team wanted him from the very beginning. Why would you think the same kind of thing wouldn't have happened in the future?
We lucked out that year in beating both wake forest and ball state, largely because Cosgroves defense came up big at the end of the game, namely Zack Bowman.
I think Bo aware of being decent but not doing what was necessary to be great. In 2012, after the abysmal showing against Wisky...the writing was on the wall. He needed a defense who could stop the run, and to build an offense that didn't have a safety playing QB. He needed to risk a losing season to change the personnel and to some extent the culture. The team had become very insular, and they played with an emotional state similar to Bo. They played cool when the competition was weak but they lost control under pressure or when perfection was required. Bo was just lucky in his first 3 years...and likely Frost was as well at UCF...IMO we have the some of the least efficient coaching in CF over the last 20 years...somebody like Leach maximized minimal talent in every stop, and in nearly every season...and we have minimized talent consistently. It would feel good to have one season where we over performed our stars and personnel.Oh yeah, sure.......that's why Bo could never get even remotely close to racking up losing seasons. You betcha, that's why Clownahan's recruits saved Pelini for seven years.
