Obviously Warren is the guy most are putting the blame on. As the B1G commissioner it should fall on his shoulders. This has all become a horrible PR nightmare for the B1G. One that seems to be easily reconciled. Supposedly all the university presidents are the ones who can hire and or fire a B1G commissioner. Not sure if true, just something I saw come across twitter. If this is indeed true and the majority of universities really want to play. The solution to this problems seems easy and obvious. Remove Warren from his position and reinstate football.
Do so would pretty well fix all problems. It makes the players, parents, coaches, fans happy. It helps the universities at least have some cash flow coming in. It removes enemy #1 Kevin Warren, which helps sooth the PR issues for the B1G.
Now being this hasn't been done. It really has me wondering if it was the presidents who chose to cancel the season and Warren is just the fall guy. Maybe its the presidents we need to be putting pressure on, not Warren?

Kevin Warren can’t do anything that the presidents don’t agree with, especially things with these kind of ramifications. The presidents most certainly agreed. The questions are: was it unanimous agreement? Did Warren have to hard sell and push for the agreement that was reached? What is not a question is that no matter what decision was made and how it came about, the presidents assumed and expected Warren to do a much better job handling the PR of the decision. Epic failure on that part, no question.

This has been flogged to death, but here it is again: Kevin Warren does the bidding of his employers. His employers are the chief executive officers of the institutions that make up the Big 10 conference. The decision was not his. The end

Ya think?

I also don't think it's a great look when ADs come out several days later saying they were really hoping to have some say in the matter, but golly gee whiz they just couldn't get a seat at the table. I mean sure, the livelihoods of nearly everyone who works for them were on the line and all, but they thought Kevin Warren would pass along the message.

I dont understand why the presidents were the liaisons in the first place. It put them in a bad situation where they have to explain why sports create a bigger danger than what they are doing with the rest of their student population. It should have been the ADs. They have a better insight into the unique challenges that student athletes would be facing and would have provided some cover for the university presidents that have in-person classes.

Some people think they have it solid but they still do not get it.

Warren was supposed to vouch for the ADs in the meetings and he did not, as every AD was on board with playing. ADs were not allowed in the meetings that led to the decision. Warren was supposed to be their representative but was not. Warren instead was all for cancellation, and likely pushed it.

Also, votes this major are supposed to be unanimous. So even if they did “vote” 12-2, it wasnt enough. There should have been more discussion. But the vote sounds like it was more of a discussion and wasnt even formal.

Warren did not play his role and actively pushed to shut things down. This is the problem.

Equally important: who called to have a meeting? A week earlier this had essentially been settled.

There’s been a lot of smoke around the respective states and their Governor’s involvement if you were to believe Mr Big Boat’s sources
Heck even the NE Governor’s office has been very heavy handed in state aid/public health/etc
And these Governor’s Offices are like modern day mafia, working through back channels
Good luck ever finding out all the details of what the hell happened
It’s laughable that Warren is the most visible player in this
I’m not claiming conspiracy here it’s just how these offices operate out of the vision of the public eye
That FOIA should detail every state’s Governor’s office communication with any BIG office
I bet it was all phone calls ;)

I think it's questionable logic to think that a brand new league commissioner had enough say in things to cancel a season. It appears likely that he certainly facilitated in favor of a spring season but the presidents are the ones to finger and they'll remain silent and have to answer to nobody.

And if he did somehow cancel the season over the objections of 14 ADs and several university presidents, there’s a huge leadership problem with the Big Ten but it sure as Hell doesn’t begin and end with the commissioner.

Sure seems like the Big 10 is imploding and not the Big 12.....
The B1G will weather this just fine in the long run. It looks really bad from our perspective but it will survive. NU will survive. Our athletic department got a little too comfortable with the TV revenue and wasn't conservative enough IMO with the resources. Who knew this stupidity was going to happen but you have to prepare for emergencies and we were caught with our pants down on this. The athletic department can't spend like the federal government because they can't print money.

I’ll go with the governors of Minnesota,Wisconsin,Illinois Michigan, Pennsylvania. Just a hunch on my part hey at least the governor of Michigan saved Jim another humiliating loss to Ohio st

Nobody wants to own the dirty deed.

Does anyone think:
  • these 'blue' states will get increased federal aid to compensate for their corona virus economic loss?

  • someone in the House will Lobby for aid to Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, etc..

  • anyone is going to lobby for the "red" state Nebraska on getting it federal aid for its corona virus loss?

  • Most of the B1G presidents might have already been told they would get bailed out by their governors/representatives and so decided to go ahead on the vote not to play.

I understand this is political, but does anyone else see how this could go?

We are def in the wrong conference.

I am going to go with a grander viewpoint. How about a society that caters to the 1% instead of the whole and a society that is deathly afraid of being sued. The first kid that died the lawsuits would be flowing. I blame all of us

I think the governors probably had some degree of influence in this, but I don't think there's any question that the culpability for shutting down the season lies with the university presidents.

Not a chance. Even if a plaintiff was able to prove where they got covid, no judge wants to set the precedent of hearing that kind of case.

Guarantee the Big 10 has lost a lot of respect.

is it as simple as, the NCAA does not allow liability waivers, and the presidents didnt want to take the chance of a kid getting seriously sick and suing the university for millions. That isnt an AD decision.

Yes, I understand that not playing is costing them millions as well...

And yes, Im on the boat that they should has attempted to make it work. There are precautions that could have happened if they really wanted them to. But college kids are gonna go out and have fun. Would a player be more careful if he knew that if he tested positive he wouldnt play? How does that answer change for a scout team player, with no shot of seeing the field?

this would be a good point if the majority of the P5 agreed with the B1G's powers that be.

but, they don't. they're playing. we're watching.

Just to demonstrate how ridiculous this whole liability thing is:

Imagine Adrian Martinez goes to a party on Saturday afternoon in October and catches covid and dies. Since the university made a decision for him that he wouldn't be playing a football game at that time, they indirectly put him in a position that led to his death. In the meantime, all of these players from peer conferences are playing games and nobody is dying. That demonstrates how the conference/university acted in a reckless manner because there is a proven higher level of safety that could have been provided had they not made a financial decision based on avoiding lawsuits.

The likelihood of that ridiculous scenario playing out is equal to the fear of litigation that canceled the season.

While the decision may not have been his, it's a cop-out to say Warren does the bidding of the Big execs. I'll bet things may have gone much differently under a stronger Big commissioner (Jim Delaney says "hi!").

cant argue against that. I think they were more worried about the heart condition, but that is neither here nor there, as your point still stands.

voters. you elect socialist, you get socialism. out of work and out of money. they destroy everything they touch
The buck stops with the person in charge. Warren is in charge of the Big10. Trump is in charge of the country. Both are ultimately responsible for the situations we are in. Why you are calling Trump a socialist is beyond me as he is the guy that got elected. You may now chime in with why none of this is Trump’s fault at all...

Fully agree, nobody wants to have the one kid that dies be on their campus. Litigation is a bitch...

Some governors may have leaned on presidents, but ultimately the decision was the presidents. There was a vote, but they don’t want anybody knowing how they voted, due to blowback. Hence the lack of a consistent story and why Warren looks like a dope. He makes the big bucks to be the Patsy
