White is staying with Nebraska

Should be seeing a lot of AWIII at the 3. Gill and Webster should be solid at the 2, with Roby able to play either the 2 or 3. Do need another true point and another big, although I've been told by those who've seen him that Roby can play 1 in a pinch. From the videos I've seen I wonder about that, but I haven't seen him in person so...

Webster was our starting PG as a Freshman. I imagine he will slide over and handle the ball when Watson is out.

I agree. Webster has improved his decision making and ball handling since his freshman year, so likely would do even better at point. When I say "Roby in a pinch" it would have to be when both Watson and Webster had foul trouble, truly in a pinch. Gill supposedly has very good ball handling skills and is a solid passer off the bounce, although I haven't seen him live in any of the scrimmages, so Miles may look at him as the emergency point ahead of Roby.

As much as I like Watson's upside as a PG, I don't think he's where the team needs him to be as a play-maker yet. His shot has a lot of work to be done and often times when things go awry, his solution is to pull up and shoot a low-percentage jumper. That said, Buddy Hield had an awkward form for his jump shot early in his career and he turned into a player of the year candidate, so with a lot of practice and coaching, I do believe Watson can be a home run player for us down the road. The sooner he clicks, the sooner this team can compete at higher levels.

If Jordy has any game, I truly believe this next season's team has a chance of really making some B1G noise.

I also think we will see alot of the "small" lineup with White at the 4 (not that we actually use a 4). Watson, Webster, Gill, White and Jacobsen/Jordy.

I think I disagree with you, big time, depending on your definition of "play-maker." Unlike pretty much everyone else on the team, Watson can make his own shot. He can create just enough space to give himself enough of a look. And those low % shots? He seems to bury them just at the right time in a game. I don't know his % from the field, but I do know there were a number of times last year that he would seemingly make something out of nothing. I don't remember seeing a lot of dribble-drive penetration and kicking it out, but that wasn't our game last year. He may be the best "play-maker" on the team.

I agree. He's good now, imagine if he could hit the 3 ball consistently.

His stats are here. 39% from the field, 27% from the 3 point line. 2.4 assists.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to get into a contest to say why I don't like the guy. I love him. I think he has amazing potential. But I just don't think he's near prime-time yet. I hope he can get there by next year, but I won't put that expectation on him. I think many fans were so excited to get the big name recruit that no matter what he does on the floor, they only see the positive (better than only seeing the negative I guess.)

For a true freshman to come in and play every game, and average nearly 9 points per game is quite impressive, however - which is why I see upside.

I just hope he can fill in the void left by Benny.

Good for Huskers that White returned. Hopefully the team is more competitive next season.

I'm confused. You post that you are concerned with his shot and him taking low% shots, but his % from the field last year was a very respectable 39%, and that is including his ho-hum 3 pt. %. What are the negatives that people are supposed to be seeing? His 3 pt. % clearly needs work, but is there something else? Frankly, I think he is as prime-time as anyone else on the team. I really don't know who else on the team I would want to have the ball at the end of a game, other than White, but again, he wouldn't be able to create a shot.

39% from the floor is not respectable, let alone "very respectable."

He also doesn't have nearly the assists I'd like to have from a polished point guard. He should be shooting in the mid 40s, and no, 39 is not close enough.

However, if you want to have a model, Buddy Hield shot 39% from the field his freshman year and 50% his senior year. It can be done but he has to put in the time.

Yes, it is very respectable, considering that includes his 3 pt. %. Without the 3 pointers bringing him down, he's at 43%, right where you think he should be. He got 24 minutes a game, which isn't bad, but with Bennie gone, he will be out there much more and will be able to better get into the flow of the game, which will make a difference. I fully expect his 3 pt. % will go up. Of course he doesn't have the assists that you want; he played 24 minutes a game, and when SS was on the floor, it was the SS show. I am guessing that the team ranked pretty low in the "assists" category. He didn't get the chance last year. I suspect that too will change with different personnel and with him getting quite a few more minutes.

Disappointed in two things I read. For one his focus is entirely on show casing himself for the NBA, not a word about team goals. Secondly he talks about wanting to have the ball more in his hands to make plays, that was some of the feedback he got. His problem is he is a turnover machine with the ball in his hands. What he should be saying is I need to improve my ball handling significantly.

Aren't you the same poster who claimed Jack McVeigh was better than White? The same Jack McVeigh that had one made FG in the last six games of the year? White had 54 turnovers in over 1000 minutes last year. Yes, he needs to improve his ball handling...without a doubt....but turnover machine is a going a bit far.

So White is interviewed, and there's an article written that I highly doubt is a complete and comprehensive account of what was all discussed, and you basically call him selfish and not worried about the team????????

From the article:

"From the pre-draft workouts, White, who had 72 turnovers and 27 assists his junior season, said he learned he needed to show more with the ball in his hands. That’s an area in which White believes Nebraska’s coaching staff, in part, can help him improve in 2016-17."

That is not a indicated to be a direct quote. That appears to be a summary by the author.
Here's his quote:

That’s kind of what I’ve been discussing with Coach to this point, is showing a little more of an all-around game, especially in the crunch-time moments,” White said. “A lot of that can be attributed to system and development of my skill. That will be my biggest thing, more ball-in-hand and making plays for others.”

Making plays for others, and he's selfish??? All around game? For a basketball player? What a concept!

Hello, he came back to this team. I could make an argument that he should have considered taking advantage of the graduate transfer rule and looked to go somewhere else if he could.

Jeepers he says that he needs to show he can do more with the ball in his hands (which I would say includes reducing the turnovers). If he can be more of a threat, that'd only open his outside game more AND will help the team. Newsflash. This is basketball. You need guys who can score in multiple ways for the TEAM to be successful.

Did he have some issues with turnovers last year. Sure. That tends to happen when you have a young team with no size, and you are the #1 or #2 scoring option on the team. Even Michael Jordan turned the ball over on average 2-3 times a game (In the NBA). ALSO, that article does not appear to be accurate with his stats. It says 72 TOs his Jr. year. That appears to be for his CAREER.

54 last year, 1.6 a game. By the # 1 or # 2 scoring threat.

The article was about his decision to come back to Nebraska. Maybe you should send an email to the writer and ask him to write a story on team goals and to ask White what his are before you label him as selfish, when he came back to a team that had a losing record, when he didn't have to.

As far as showcasing himself for the NBA......GOOD. Nebraska needs players to make it to the NBA. It has been since who? Mikki Moore? Great college basketball programs have players who make it to the NBA.

Same poster but your memory is bad. I stated White may be better now but not once Jack gets some strength and weight Jack would be better. Jack is clearly an all around better player, MUCH better game around the basket. White at 6'8" should be able to post up a guy 15 feet and in but he can't, it's not in his game. He can shoot and make a straight line drive to the basket. He can't even dribble against pressure, he either gets it stolen or turns in over. He won't be anything more than a role player in the NBA unless he improves his ball handling significantly. As I said then he has other skills where he excels like his defensive hands and rebounding.

It would not have bothered me one bit if he had moved on but I said from Day 1 he was coming back because with his ball handling skills he would get eaten alive in the NBA. I recognize most have the opposite opinions and that's fine, makes it a discussion right?

I recognize the narrow focus of the article so certainly not saying he is selfish but it wouldn't have been out of context for him to mention perhaps a goal of an NCAA Tourney or something. But again he was called to talk about his decision so I get that.

On the second point I see a difference between making plays with the ball in your hand versus ball handling like dribbling against pressure. Sure the latter leads to the former but I took it to mean "I need to more of a play maker with the ball" as opposed to I need to improve my ball handling which will allow me to make more plays with the ball in my hands. Subtle difference and I'm sure my prior opinions impact what I read, as with all of us.

I guess you could say McVeigh could be as good as White one day, but White's shooting and rebounding ability are far and away better. And as far as agility, speed and ball handling, McVeigh is not better at any of these things. Sure, he could vastly improve, but right now McVeigh needs a lot of work to get to White's level.

As a true freshman McVeigh was a MUCH better ball handler than White, much better passer, actually demonstrated moves around the basket and to the basket. White came off picks to shoot until later in the season when he added some straight line drives. Who will have the better NBA career Shields or White? My money would be on Shields because of his all around game. I'm not convinced White can make a team, Shields may not either of course.
