What is so controversial? NU is not a large school for the B1G or P5 in general. Small state, mid sized enrollment and alumni base for P5. Rutgers has almost 70k students enrolled, NU is what 25k. Makes sense Rutgers would have more social media.
What matters more right now is TV viewers. NU is in the solid middle of the B1G in that category. OSU, Mich, Penn St and WI generate significantly more viewers than NU. MSU noticeably more. NU, IA, MN are in that next tier. Team like Rutgers barely registers. Check sportsmediawatch if you want to see viewership by game going back years.
Where social media will matter is when players start getting paid for name and likeness. Will the bad football schools with big social media following get kids paid more? Will that impact recruiting?
