What's wrong with Nebraska's defense? USA Today..

The authors point is a statistical one as he points out. Then he shows examples of the poor effort on Defense. Seems pretty clear.

Banker is the problem and as long as he is here our defense will always be our problem. I think once we get the right qarterback our offense will be fine, but there is no way to hide banker.

I agree. Then you look at how UNC hired Chizik, and he turned them around from one of the worst defenses in the nation to one of the best in just one year. Coaching matters.

Riley had the budget to hire about anybody to be his coordinators. Instead he hired a guy that everyone at Oregon State wanted him to fire.

You talking about the same Gene Chizik that was hot garbage at Iowa St? Care to explain why he sucked so bad there?

If Eichorst is worth all this money he should at they end of the year discuss with Riley about making a change.

Iirc the article did not mention effort but showed pictorial examples of players being out of position.

Sure he was a head coach there and at UNC he is the defensive coordinator. Hope that helps you understand that not all great coordinators make great head coaches.

Banker isn't going anywhere as long as Riley is the head coach. They are buddies and have been together for quite some time now.

The same Chizik that has coached multiple undefeated teams as a defensive coordinator. Much like Bo, he sucked as a head coach, but he is a very good defensive coordinator.

I guess you missed the fact that he has a national championship as a head coach. He's a perfect example of the fact that players matter....

I am still of the opinion that if we are going to run this scheme on defense, we need tight press coverage at the line of scrimmage. Letting receivers run their routes uncontested is just plain stupidity.

I have admit, i never got why he hired Banker here either, i hoped some of the other staff he hired, being ex Defensive Co at some point to would maybe help Banker out, having a so called 3 headed monster at DC. But either Banker doesn't listen to any of these guys or they are not voicing what they feel could help us defensively..

Never said he was going anywhere. Just said our defense will always be our problem as long as he is here. I know full well MR will never fire his guy banker. That is why MR will never win anything here. I do think it will be easier for the next coach to come in and take over the program though. Mike I believe is the right guy to try to fix the culture around here.

North Carolina has solid talent. They don't have elite talent on defense, but you can see what solid coaching can do with underperforming talent. You saw it with Bo in 2003 and when he used Callahan's talent. You need both to be great. Unfortunately, we know we will never have solid coaching with Banker leading our defense. We aren't going to kill it recruiting either. This staff doesn't have any elite recruiters. Keep making excuses for this staff if it makes you feel better.

Coaching matters but so does talent. Banker has zero to work with minus Collins.

Players matter but only to an extent. 2010 Auburn was a product of Malzahn and they were lucky enough to have the offensive firepower to go the distance. There is a reason he's the head man down at Auburn now. If players were the end all be all of the story then USC should never struggle.

He hired Banker because they are close and attached at the hip. When Riley was hired many knew who the DC was going to be before he was even hired but no one wanted to believe it would be Banker.

I think several factors are at play,
one is santos getting kicked off,
the next is injuries to rose and banderas
gregory leaving early
poor recruiting at rush end and db
and the most damaging is our offense doesn't run the ball anymore, control the clock and keep our defense fresh.
plus turnovers by our offense, with good field position is a decent way to kill a defense too.

our defense couldn't have been any fresher against nw

The three positions most though Bo at least recruited to an average level were DB, RB, and OL. All three of those are well below average and our worst positions on the field. Just shows how little effort that staff put into recruiting. I honestly see lots of frosh starters next year with the first real recruiting class.

It starts with coaching and Banker's history show's he's a loser...no surprise where we are. He will have to go sooner than later.

How do we ever score any points or get any stops with a roster so bad.

I guess teams just let us take the lead in 4th in 7 games this year.

Rush offense and pass defense, both strengths of the team last year. What we're seeing this year is a reflection of poor coaching more so than a lack of talent.

I'm not sure why it's so difficult for some to see that teams typically look more talented when they are well-coached?

Running was because of one difference maker (Ameer). Pass defense was because of a C2/matchup zone scheme that put many into coverage while giving teams free run at running the ball.

But Chizik inherited a team of 5 star recruits and players that were glad to see a coaching change with zero players injured. Our staff inherited a team of 1 star recruits that hated losing their coach and has everyone injured. Big difference.

The only reason the running game was good the last few year's was the running backs if we did not have him the running game would look like it does this year

There you go making all kinds of sense again! Nice summary. And run wild they did last year; Ameer carrying people for us ; whlle we made all these opposing rb's look like all americans. .... This year we don't get a pass: and every opposing qb gets his AA day at play.
