What's the problem at QB?

I just can't understand how Stanton won the championship in the best Calif has to offer and he and Fiffe (sp) can't challenge for starting QB's at Nebr! MR recruited him to OS and BP got him and Tommy the same year! Did the coaches misjudge Stanton's talent level or what? I know Fiffe was a walk on! Any opinions?
