What will people consider a success for the defense

To allow less points than the team in red.

That. I'm sure as heck not expecting a shutout.

Make some plays. We will give up some and that's ok virtually every team would. But make some and win the game.

I guess I'm of the opinion that we won't see a lot of consistency in this defense "for a while".

It has mostly to do with imperfect fits at OLB, while I expect Newby, Gifford, Davis to improve and make their share of plays throughout the season, I don't know that I'm confident enough in their overall ability to play at a high level every down for a sustained period of games. I think in that regard, I expect an element of "whew...escape" to be prevalent in many of our games because they occupy a supremely important position group.

The secondary's chief ailment is that they are young, but are relatively talented. I expect to see more consistency out of them by the end of the year than I do the OLBs because they mostly need experience. I really would like to see them get off blocks better in the short term, but I don't know that that's something I can see them just flipping a switch on in 48 hours. (Edit: If Jones does come back by conference, might have a whole different outlook on this group, or the D as a whole).

I feel good overall about the ability and direction of the DL. But we're really a Stolt injury a way from being in a perilous position as a whole defense.

Out of the coordinator, I appreciate that he plays scheme that is not super blitz ball, and the personnel are limiting on how aggressive he can be without taking undue risk. However, I'd really like to see more personnel matching, getting into the nickel, and tightening some things up like we saw in the third quarter. I don't have a whole ton of fear he's going to play prevent D all year, but I want to see him show that he's going to make better use of the available risk space he has.

Discipline and sound tackling. We may still lose the game, but we can't kill ourselves with missed tackles/blown coverages/penalties. If we lose because Oregon is just better, so be it. BUT, I think we have the talent to win the game, we just need to be disciplined enough to do so.

ok, well then if that is what it will take for success, you might as well continue to be disappointed because I am not sure anyone will hold Oregon to less than 24 points this season.

Washington, USC and Oregon St. did it last year. A 'W' any way we can get it vs OU - including a 45-44 game for example - is a good result. I have a high bar for our high priced DC to be "successful". I hope he puts the D back in Iaco.
