Boy that Tommy Armstrong kid is just awful right? The decision making, not a leader, I cant wait until we have POB or Lee under center!
No but seriously Tommy is the reason we won that game, him battling through that third quarter drive only to collapse after he knew we had scored was almost as impressive to me as the TD run to win it. Theres not enough you could say about the way he willed our team to win.
Rushing Offense: Not the game everybody on here thought we would need, we got 95 yards from Ozigbo and Tommy each. Many Scrollers were calling that Oz would need 120+ with multiple TDs for us to even be in the game. Newby ran for another 45ish, but 25 of that came on one play. I thought our ineffectiveness in the run game for the 1st Quarter and start of 4th Q came because of bad playcalling. Ozigbo in shotgun run was getting us 6 or 7 yards per carry from right off tackle gap, we went away from that to start the fourth.
Passing Offense: Tommy finished with 200 yards on the nose and no interceptions. From the outside that looks like an average game but our passing was as clutch as it has ever been, the TD to Westy on the 3rd down blitz, another TD to Westy on the goal line after what felt like 7 straight passes. The fourth down to even give us a shot was what I thought the most important play of the day. Others will say the punt return or the TD run. But we still could have scored if DPE only has a 5 yard or no return. The run was only possible because of 4th and 9.
Rushing Defense: Oregon finished with 300 some odd yards on the ground. Which is too much but when you consider where it happened it feels a little better. Their most succesfull runs consistently were around the outside using their speed, where we knew we were at a disadvatage. Then they had a lot of QB keeper off the zone read which Prukop looked really smooth running. Once Royce went down they got almost nothing between the tackles and that is encouraging going into B1G play that our d-line that was supposed to be the weakness is a really good part of a potentially special defense.
Passing Defense: Prukop ended up with less than 200 yards passing but he did not seem fazed by the crowd. He missed a few receivers down the field but thats more on him than the crowd. "Lockdown U" is what the secondary is calling themselves and nobody has proved them wrong yet. My only complaint is that we didnt force any TO's but thats nitpicky considering that if Prukop missed it was never bad enough for our guy to have a good shot at it.
Special Teams: This unit looked really good on Saturday, coverage was excellent as they had one kick return that got past the 25 before penalties and only one punt return that went for less than 10 yards. Lightbourn did well to put them inside the 20. The punt return team was still somewhat suspect on blocking but I'm sure Oregon has the fastest gunners in the country and getting a hand on them cant be easy. Either way it was nice to see DPE finally break free and show why he was an All-American as a freshman.
