I'm not judging Coach Dub's actions nor advocating any course of action here. I'm not even thinking long-term on how this might impact the staff and/or university at this point (i.e Lawrence Phillips). My only thought and question right now is what happens to our class--especially the WRs--if Williams is no longer a part of the program in the near future?
Personally, I don't see McQuitty or KJJ looking elsewhere. I think we keep those two regardless, unless something goes drastically wrong, PR-wise, with the handling of Coach Dub's (possible) departure.
Obviously our chances with the uncommitted 4- and 5-star guys has gone dramatically south, regardless of whether Williams is still at NU. Sure, coach Riley has been very involved with the process with a lot of the receivers' recruiting. Is that enough to close even a couple of those guys? Nobody can gauge the moral impact this might have on recruits and their parents, but it won't be good. You can damn well bet other coaches will be using it to their full advantage. No matter what NU does, I think our odds are very poor with the remaining blue-chip WRs.
If NU does keep him, we are still less than 30 days away from the season opener. I hate to say this, but it's quite probable KW will not be "available" for the Fresno State or Wyoming games. The Oregon game on the 16th would theoretically be his first opportunity to coach again. Currently we don't have any WRs visiting until then, which might be a tiny silver lining in a huge storm cloud.
If NU decides to cut him loose, the timing couldn't be worse. If KW 'resigns for personal reasons' (that'll likely be the way it's handled if the University makes that decision), my thinking is that it probably will happen quickly in order to mitigate the PR impact heading into play. So how likely is it that Riley will be able to hire a new position coach in friggin' September? If that's not an option, who will coach the receivers in the interim?
I don't have any answers. Obviously, this is just a giant shit sandwich for all concerned. I love Coach Williams, but honestly don't know what the best course of action is for the program and university moving forward.
