Donte Williams.....I ask because we're hearing that he will be coming to SC to replace our DB coach who is a horrible recruiter.

his recruiting is a huge strength, his coaching? let's just say nobody got better last year.
By the way sorry about your ex coach Mike Riley who is a great guy and had been a very good assistant coach a number of years ago when he was at SC but proved to be a so so head coach.

I hold no negative reservations against Donte Williams because he was completely handcuffed in a 3-4 that he had never before worked with. It is my hunch 99.9% that he was not allowed to make a lot of decisions during his time here. We had waaayyyyyy too many people who wanted their hands on the Nebraska steering wheel—what I have heard is that it was almost to the extent that our former coach was basically a figure head for our former AD, former DC and former Director of Player Personnel.

Donte Williams is one of the best recruiters in the country. He even mentored Marcus Peters at Washington. Young players love him and I could see him thriving and becoming multi-successful at SC. It was best for all parties to move on from NU, but Donte will be more than fine.

Are you talking abt Marcus Peters who plays for the Chiefs when he's not being suspended for acting like an idiot?

When he came here, his passing defense at Arizona was ranked near last in the country. He's a decent, not great recruiter and a poor coach.

Will mirror what most have said. Very good recruiter who will connect with youth. Will kill it at USC with their name recognition and location. Coaching was blah but not sure how much he was handcuffed by the DC bend don't break, give 10 yards of cushion defense. I don't think he is a great coach but adequate.

Yep, that Marcus Peters. Not saying MP is the best person out there but DW hand a hand in getting him ready to play in the League.

Not much new to add. His recruiting connections and abilities are well documented. He was only here for a year and the DB's regressed in my opinion. Fundamentals we're terrible. It was stated later that the new D coordinator didn't give time for individual work but was more concerned about how the overall D lined up. That could explain some of it. Relates well to the kids but the jury is out on his ability to develop.

How much of him looking like a poor coach was due to him being handcuffed by Diaco?

See, that's the deal, no one really knows. Not enough body of work to make a judgement. If you look just at this one year and how our DB's played you couldn't be too high but there can be exceptions. If he were paired with an experienced safety coach or someone else, it might be helpful.

To the OP: he will thrive in your environment. He may even get some support, or perhaps your line and linebackers will be more than basically non-existent on the field. People around here think cornerbacks should do the job of all linebackers.

D Williams was the coach on Riley's staff I wanted to keep. Could have single handedly kept Calibraska active

Outstanding recruiter. Unproven as a position coach. He only had one year with the DBs and the new DC at NU last year Diaco spent a lot of time as a one man orchestra conductor with his position coaches on the sidelines. Position fundamental work was reportedly eliminated for stretches of the season. And those same position coaches were learning Diaco's system "on the fly". So Dante's results with his kids were horrible, but I'm not going to judge him on that. He was put in a bad position.

Somebody inform the new qb commit that our fans gate California kids.

I'm on it. We'll gate every one of them Californians.

Right after we gate those Floribraskans and Texibraskans and Minnebraskans and Nevadabraskans and Georgibraskans.

Are we still calling kids from in-state Nebraskans or are they now Nebraskabraskans?

Fortunately, SC has an excellent Defensive Coordinator in Clancy Pendergast who will hopefully give Williams the kind of overall defense that will help him be successful.

Like others are saying, he can pull talent in, just doesn't do much with them. Not a great coach. Our DBs were 5 yards behind every play and had to commit a pass interference 9/10 to stop from getting touchdowns.

Marketing is terrible.

No offense but does it really matter how well he develops talent. Bring in 4 and 5 stars and let them lose. Your DBs will do well with the talent he will bring in the door.

What does that have to do with bad tackling, taking bad angles and his players being soft as hell???

It has a lot to do with it. If he’s being held back by Diaco, there’s not much else Williams can do. Diaco ran the show, Williams was just a puppet. I agree, Donte Williams was brought into a mess and us Husker fans really can make an accurate judgement on him. He is/was a great recruiter, all the top kids mentioned him by name when talking about us. Like some, I agree we can’t make an accurate judgement on his coaching skills. He was held back badly by Diaco.

The way former Husker DC Charlie McBride described the defensive practices he witnessed (and from talking to Parella) - Diaco did all the coaching and didn't really let his assistants have a role in practice. Therefore - impossible to evaluate how he will do under a good DC. I feel he is a good recruiter - especially is Calli - so seems like a good fit to me.

So Donte Williams might be headed to USC?

Not all kids commit to schools. Many commit to coaches, especially when it is far away from home.

Recruiting, he'll be able to keep California kids on the west coast but he's overvalued outside of that. As a position coach, he wasn't here long enough to know. He had some damn good secondaries at San Jose State or whatever small school he was at in Cali.

Keith Williams, WR coach, is the coach that would absolutely kill it at USC. Recruiting, coaching, everything. Not sure if y'all will hire someone with 3 DUI's though.
