What do we make of Oregon State's uneven performance?

I was reading a separate story about play calling at Oregon State and noticed that the team performed in a very erratic way. The year was 2013 and they lost the opener to FCS opponent Eastern Washington. Then they won six straight, then lost five straight. But won their bowl game against Boise State.

What should we make of a staff that loses an opener it should win, then wins several in a row and then loses several more? Is it lack of preparation or being ready to play? Is it merely scheduling? Is it a disparity in programs between OSU and Nebraska that we shouldn't worry about?

I'm not sure, but as much as I love this staff and what they're doing, it does trouble me that they would have such wild swings in wins and losses vs. a consistent and more predictable performance.
