Shane Swanson returned the big punt for a td in 1984 against Oklahoma State? What were you thinking before the return, another loss after the Syracuse game? Nervous? Excited?

Side notes to the game: Jason Gamble and Keith Jones were both freshmen, Travis Turner was put in after Craig Sundberg struggled. Ironically, Sundberg would be inserted in the OU game later on in the year in the 4th quarter after being benched earlier in the game.

I was thinking, "this dump that i'm going to take in my diaper sure is going to feel good."

YOU nailed it; thats how I felt, also I was thinking " go cowboy go" - he was one tough rodeo hombre guy ; I was full of hope, he had already flashed return grit , being tough to bring down.

ugh. couldn't get it in the end zone when we had the chance...

I remember the Syracuse game that year after Syracuse had lost 19-0 to rutgers earlier and they turn around and beat us when we were ranked #1

I was in junior high and had never missed a Nebraska game - either listened on the radio or watched on TV ever since I could remember

The weekend of the Syracuse I attended a church retreat and didn't watch/listen to the game ... I vividly remember walking through the reception hall where we were lodged and seeing the headlines on the TV that Nebraska had lost

I had an awakening at that moment and realized I had to get my priorities in order

I didn't miss another game for nearly 2 decades

I had something similar. Every season in which I attended at least 1 game, NU won a national title:
1994 vs. Kansas
1995 vs. Iowa State
No games in 1996
1997 vs. Texas Tech
No games in 1998

Went to the Cal game in 1999, that ended my streak.

I was at that Syracuse game. That dome was unbelievably loud and our guys were clearly rattled. Sundberg had some success in the 1st quarter but then played like a scared rabbit. We were also not the same after our fullback (Rathman??) went out early with a concussion. Let me tell you, I don't care what their record was or how good they were, but on that day those Syracuse defenders came to play. They were PHYSICAL as hell and beat the crap out of our guys.

South Endzone student section, maybe 25 or 30 rows up (long time ago, so don't recall for sure). Bedlam.

Swanson should have been on the field for that ill-fated 4th down play against OU. For some reason an undersized backup wingback was in the game, and didn't make a critical block.

Swanson was a solid receiver and return man. Didn't he make a bit of a splash during the NFL strike as a replacement player?

I believe there was a time out taken and Shane went out during the time out. A good block on that play and the huskers would have been playing for the national championship

I remember the Syracuse game in Lincoln the year before,, much closer than the score. I said to my wife that day,, Watch out next year in that dome. Crap I was right.

don't recall the NFL strike so much that year, except that it interrupted fantasy league I joined for grins...
