We're number 41!

Michigan State at #13 is my biggest surprise in the top 20. I think they will miss their QB a lot more than that, and it isn't even remotely possible they will have the same amount of luck this year, as they had last year. Tennessee, even with all their returning starters, are still in the SEC, and I don't see them finishing anywhere near #8.

Sounds about right. Our athletic programs overall are really average. Maybe that's our goal.

Seemed fair to me. They certainly pointed out our potential to be much better if we can get reliable line play. Obviously most of us will be pretty shocked if we repeat 2015 when it almost looked like we threw two or three games.

After the beatdown Iowa took in the bowl, I'm surprised they didn't have to petition the NCAA for readmission to D1.

Yeah, but if you think about it... There is no viable argument for any type of poll in March... What's even more absurd is how they will create another poll in April, another in July, and then another in preseason.... All of them will show movement...I refuse to read these polls. they Are dumb.

Since Dantonio had his first big season I predicted that the next season Sparty would come crashing back down to earth...well up until the last couple years. Last time I predicted their crash was 3 seasons ago. I looked at what they had coming back and thought there is no way they had enough O to beat anyone decent. For the first few games I felt like a genius as their O stunk (I think through the first few games their D had something like twice as many TDs as the O). However, they found away to stay afloat early before things clicked with them going on to win the conference and Rose Bowl. I hope they crash and burn this year but I'm done doubting them.

Well I guess it could be worse....

Agree too that preseason rankings like this are 100% meaningless.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!! What else you doin in March? I killed half a cup of coffee reading that poll, if it had been an hour or two later, that would have been a beer.

Yeah, but if you go back in that timeline, it was with their best QB in school history (isn't he?), and he just walked out the door. No way they finish #13, and their luck will run out eventually. However, this is meant as no disrespect to them they have been awesome and Dantonio is one of the best coaches in all of CFB.

I have never been afraid of Michigan St. We own them. They got lucky the past 2 years before last year.

If the 2014 game was in Lincoln. We would have beat them. Possibly by 2 TD's

I have to disagree on Michigan State getting lucky in East Lansing. They stomped us for 3 quarters, got up big on us, and relaxed, only to allow us back in the game.

Didn't we beat UCLA?

We're a lot closer to the top 25 than we are sitting at 41.

Check Athlons out when their maz comes out this summer I bet they change their tone.

It will be interesting to see where Phil Steele has us. Nebraska will be a hard team to predict this year. A blue blood program which has averaged around 25th in recruiting for several years. We have top 25-30 talent, but had a hard luck season last year under a first year coach. Is Riley up to the task? Will we be riddled with injuries again? Will Armstrong improve or will he cost us two or three games again? Can we reload in the trenches? Our schedule is not that tough and sets us up for a 10-2 season (best case scenario) or a 8-4 season. I HIGHLY doubt we go 5-7 again. We have a good shot at winning the West. So.... I think 41st is too low. I would put us around 27 until we prove ourselves.

If you really want to go back on the timeline, Cook didn't open the season as the starter in 2013. In fact, they gave snaps to 3 different guys before settling on Cook. By the end of that season Cook was certainly playing at a high level but it was still his first year. The QB that walked out the door is not the same one that led MSU in 2013. If MSU's season is based on replacing the 2015 or even 2014 (which imo was his best year) version of Cook with someone who can step in and not miss a beat then I agree with you...they are in trouble.

But it's not. There upcoming season is about other areas of their FB team stepping up until the new QB can become comfortable (kind of like they did with Cook in 2013). If their back 7 is better (which it wasn't great last year) and they can lean on their running game (which was led by a true frosh last year) then I don't quite understand why them taking a slight step back seems so unreasonable...and yes, that is what we are talking about...taking a step back...they were a playoff team last year and #13 is not really playoff territory.

Nebraska enters conference play undefeated. They make the jump in the second year and the DL steps up big time. The OL plays better and then running game takes heat off Armstrong and gets the WR and TE more time to get open.

Just my thoughts. Conference could still be 5-3 but the process of getting where the team should be happens year two.

41 is way too low. Will finish high 20's.

Yea well we're ahead of the Whorn's!

Seriously, we should finish in top 25 but there are some teams there we don't want any part of yet.

according to Athlon's spring rankings.

Let's hope we end up better than that!
No kidding. Whether or not these rankings end up proving their merit, it's messed up to see some of the teams listed ahead of Nebraska. And the #41 ranking shows how our program is perceived nationwide. 5-7 in regular season, but that bowl win sure took the sting off and is perhaps why some of us are more positive about 2016 than we should be.

I hope we open conference play without a loss but beating Oregon is no easy task

Action speaks louder than words.......................................and lousy preseason rankings. Just get 'er done and GBR.
