Wednesday notebook: WR leaders stepping up without Williams
***Head coach Mike Riley said there are still no updates on the status of wide receivers coach Keith Williams. He said they’re still “exploring and looking to find out as much as we can” about the situation, and as soon as they know what’s going to happen they will let everyone else know. Williams was not at Wednesday’s practice.
***Nebraska spent the morning holding a helmets-only practice for about 90 minutes on the fields north of Memorial Stadium. The team will hold another full-pads session later in the afternoon as part of two-a-day practice schedule.
***While there wasn’t much action, one player who was back on the field after missing time with injuries this week was freshman defensive tackle Khalil Davis (knee).
***Another positive bit of news was that freshman linebacker Greg Simmons, who suffered a scary neck injury during Saturday’s scrimmage, was in attendance for Wednesday’s practice. Riley said Simmons was only dealing with a stiff neck at this point.
***On the other side, linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey (knee), defensive back Charles Jackson (hamstring), and linebacker Chris Weber (concussion) all remained out. Riley said Rose-Ivey’s status continues to be day-to-day.
***Riley said the top players working at kickoff returner were Terrell Newby, Brandon Reilly, Jordan Nelson, Tre Bryant, Wyatt Mazour and JD Spielman.
***At punt returner, De’Mornay Pierson-El, Jordan Westerkamp, Stanley Morgan were all the top contenders.
***Riley said Pierson-El was still right on track with his recovery, adding that “everything feels good, looks good” and it’s just a matter of rebuilding his confidence back to where it was before the injury.
***Riley admitted he was concerned about the focus his team would have during such crazy offseason, but he said he couldn’t be prouder of the way the players have handled everything and come to practice ready to work “with a smile on their faces.”
***The hype for Bryant continues to roll, as Riley said the freshman was “in the conversation” in the running back rotation and ability-wise is very likely to make an immediate impact this season. If it’s not at running back, Riley said Bryant would have a very big role on special teams if he plays this season.
***Asked if there were any true freshmen that were for sure going to play this season, Riley said “yes” but wanted to reveal those names at a later date once final decisions had been made on all the freshmen.
***Riley said this week was kind of Nebraska’s “training camp” in terms of finding out which freshmen would be in the mix and how the depth charts would start to shake out going into the first game.
***NFL scouts from the Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills all took in practice.
