Wednesday, March 9th: Nebraska at Kansas State - (Huskers lose 6-4)

We made the drive down to Manhattan to see the boys live for the first time this year, nothing groundbreaking but here are my thoughts...

I was disappointed by how many bad ABs I saw tonight. Not only does this club find it nearly impossible to string together anything on offense, but a few guys struck out on three pitches and at least one was blown away by an 88 mph fastball.

Obviously the three errors were killers, but outside of a couple plays in the Sam Houston series the defense has been solid so I'm not worried. I'm guessing they will be working on a lot of defensive bunt drills in the near future.

Olson pitched well but seems to be better suited facing the lineup once. Ornelas came in and did exactly what he wanted to do, he got ground balls right at his infielders. K State couldn't touch Martin or Hood, which was encouraging (especially since we will need to find a replacement for Bunz).

A couple of the young guys looked the part. I'm happy that Cervantes has had better luck at the plate this year, but I want Core Jackson in the lineup as much as possible. Jessen and Anglim also put together some pretty good ABs and hit the ball well. These guys need playing time and the upcoming schedule is a great opportunity for them.

It really seems like a few of the core returners are pressing. This team will only go as far as guys like Anderson, Matthews, Chick, and Gomes (if he gets out of the doghouse) will take them but they need to focus on the fundamentals.

The bats are indeed my biggest worry.

What did Gomes do to land in the doghouse? It’s pretty clear he’s there. He hasn’t touched the field in several games after being pretty hot to start the year.

He was on deck to end the game last night, but I don't think he's played since he blew the save against UT Arlington. He had a base running mistake down there, but I'm not sure it warrants riding the pine like this.

Gomes was not in the lineup for the blown save game making that the first of four straight games off the lineup. I did read a small message saying he was still working through some soreness not arm related.
