Nate's observations
***Today really wasn't the best practice from a spectator's point of view as the team held a 90+ minute walk-thru without pads or helmets.
***Former Husker defensive tackle and Outland Trophy award winner Larry Jacobson was at practice today. I also saw former Husker defensive backs coach George Darlington outside the stadium after practice. It's always nice to see guys like that come out to watch practice.
***Wide receiver Ne'Land Smith was at practice today. The son of former Husker and NFL Hall of Famer Neil Smith is walking on to Nebraska. He graduated from Blue Springs High School last year.
***Scouts from the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs were at practice today. This is the second time I've seen scouts from the Chiefs so far this fall camp.
***Practice started off with the normal special teams period where they worked on the field goal and kickoff units. I noticed some young faces one the second team kickoff unit which included Lamar Jackson, JoJo Domann, Tre Bryant, Dicaprio Bootle and JD Spielman.
***After special teams the top offense went to one practice field and held their walk-thru with the scout team defense and the top defense was on another getting looks from the scout team offense. Each of the top units were getting a lot of different looks from the scout teams working on formation recognition and alignments. It looked like they were putting in a few new things, but for the most part working on some things that they'll be seeing in live periods this afternoon and for other practices to follow.
***Nebraska's linebackers are impressive looking. I know it's been said a lot, but the turn around that position group has seen in the last year is pretty amazing. All of those guys look great, too. Josh Banderas, Marcus Newby, Dedrick Young and Tryin Ferguson are just a few of the guys that look to be about 10 pounds slimmer and faster.
***Tight end Cethan Carter was back out on the field working out following his concussion that caused him to miss a few practices. I'm not sure if he'll go through contact this afternoon but it was a good sign to see him out there catching some passes.
***Defensive tackle Khalil Davis is another guy that had missed some time with a knee injury that was back out there today. He said his knee is feeling much better and he's good to go.
***Safety Aaron Williams was working as the nickel back today with the top unit.
***I had more than a few people tell me that Nebraska's practice yesterday was one of their best and that they were really getting after it. The common theme people relayed to me was that there was an awful lot of competition going on and that the team as a whole seems to be shaping up nicely.
***Overall, I thought the mood and the energy was really good today. Sometimes you see guys hit a wall at this point of fall camp, but I haven't really noticed that so far this year.
