We play a 3-3-4 on passing downs

Not sure I would call that a "rush" from McMullen. I guess really it should be a 3-2-5. Unfortunately thus far that's pretty much the norm for him.
Would we be better off starting Freedom and Racoon Boy when he gets back from injury?

I'm not sure - but clearly he punted on off-season fitness. We just don't have anyone else to replace him.

Could Gangwish be an option to play there? I don't know how different the base and rush end are. I'd say at this point we want to have Freedom out there. And at least we know Gangwish will go balls out.

Wow... Seriously, if that's the "effort" we get out of McMullen routinely, might as well just put another linebacker (oh wait, we don't have any extra linebackers, thanks Bo.) err.... Defensive Back (Hello Daniel Davie) on the field.

That is really unbelievable, he moves like he's hurt. Kind of ambled around until he found a free blocker then jogged over to engage him. I think Gangwish was listed as out around 3 weeks after the BYU Hail Mary, so he would be returning soon. At least you know he will go Hell bent for leather, he sounds like he's dying to get back in the field.

Every time I've watched him this is the effort I've seen. Disturbing.

Probably not the best play to judge him on. He's line up outside the TE, so he starts off with a pretty wide gap, and there isn't really anyone he is going to engage with immediately. It's a stunt, where I assume he is assigned to follow after Maurice, so he doesn't bump him. But, yeah, even at that he's not looking fluid at all. I thought he looked good last year. Not sure what the deal is this year.

He should be ashamed of his performance so far on the field. I mean, what can he say to excuse his play when watching back the game film?

It's funny you posted this because right when it happened I took a video and sent it to a few friends. After watching the game again, his lack of hustle is kind of embarassing. Makes me wonder if he's hurt. If he keeps playing like this, I say the starting DEs should be Freedom and Gangwish

More like he moves as if he is overweight and not in condition.

You're probably right, I was just trying to eliminate that possibility in my mind since they started fall camp almost 2 months ago. Banker apparently said this was his best game of the year.

It's on the coaches, they are allowing it to continue.
Is there any way that his responsibility on that stunt was to play soft and watch for anything short over the middle? I know Saturday that he ended up in pass coverage at least once and of course got beat. That is the only logical excuse for what I see there. If not, then man that is embarrassing.

Banker is trying....the nickle blitz with Kalu worked the first time they tried it. The next time - the So Miss QB recognized it and threw right to that side for a big gainer. The QB we faced last week was not a big time arm - but he was smart and willing to take some hits to hold the ball long enough to get his guys open.

That said - the coverage side of the D was not good. They over ran some plays later in the game (pressing IMHO).....but the run D held up well even when we had to play pretty much pass D every down.

If they can get some guys back at LB and Dline.....and continue to use the blitzes and stunts more effectively - improvement is possible. We will not be a dominant D this season - but we are going to face some pretty bad offenses in B1G play.

Amen, Sir. Thank you. I couldn't agree more. If your (with) tongue in cheek never mind. If serious I could not agree more. Coaches are the authority. If the authority lets players get away with crap like this, its cancer to the team. I don't care how thin NU is at DE as far as talent goes, there are a bunch of freshman and walk-ons who would at least give it there all if they had a chance. I'd rather see a DE trying his ass off and getting crushed by a OT then seeing a guy take a playoff like that. You think McBride would have ever been ok with that? A guy like Melton would have lost his shit on that.

It looks like McMullen is expecting a very quick pass and was going to try to bat it down, and then the pass never came so he was like "oh I better go do what I was supposed to."

Edit: maybe not... he was even slow getting out of his stance...

Not going to defend the player...but I know some stunts, that guy is supposed to delay just a little so the offensive line maybe forgets about him or picks up someone else. In this instance when he comes inside there are 2 guys waiting there--excellent job by the offensive line picking it up--and at that point he doesn't put a lot of effort, but he probably wasn't going to get past those 2 guys anyway.
