Way OT: Rifle Hunting

Any deer hunters on the board? I have plenty of buddies who rifle hunt and I think that's weak and not very sporting. Plus I'm bored at work and argued with a guy about it for a few minutes this morning. Rifle hunters just strike me as the type of people trying to compensate for something.

I work out of an office in my house and I like to shoot rabbits from time to time out my back door with a pellet gun. So, no. Not a real rifle hunter, but I do like to hunt wabbits.

I will take a doe with a rifle if I am limited on hunting time with the bow. The only wish I have is that Nebraska would move rifle season away from the rut totally. Other than that, more power to them. More permits=more money=better outdoors programs. Also helps the butcher business and keeps the herd in check. There are already way too many on roads as it is.

When I had more time I did both rifle and bow hunting. You can give some people the very best rifle/scope and they still cant get a deer. I live in Ks and it is to the point where we dont drive on the highway at night during hunting or rut seasons. Disease has become a problem as well.

You strike me as the type of person that thinks all law is just. Back to the topic, because rifle hunting isn't hunting and sure isn't sporting. Kill a deer with an axe and I'd say well done.

There is no axe season in my state so your logic is flawed....unless of course you would rather condone illegally harvesting a deer to show your man card.
I have legally hunted for close to 50 years in many different states and all of it with long guns.

I've never seen that axe hunting is illegal. And the "hunting" you speak of with long guns isn't hunting.

Huh? Why are you freaking out? I have taken dozens of deer with a bow, as well as alot with a rifle. Not one of the deer I shot with a bow knew I was there and hunting it. Can't say the same as some I took with a rifle. Unless you physically confront the animal, and take its life with your bear hands your point is a non-starter. Get over yourself.

I don't hunt. I also don't care how folks spend their free time and money as long as it is legal. Getting deer off the roads may save a few humans so I'm all for it.

My kid shot a deer with a rifle this year in the middle of the Sandhills. He had to work to get him. It was pretty sporty. I think jerking off in a tree stand by yourself for a month is a giant waste of time, but whatever floats your boat. I don't hunt but it's a fun weekend with the extended family and friends.

I would cross bow/bow hunt or black powder hunt but simply don't have enough time or vacation time. 2 days with a rifle and I have meat in the freezer.

They don't allow rifle hunting for deer here in Illinois, just shotgun/muzzle loader and archery. I don't find rifle any less sporting, personally. I plan on starting to hunt soon, but I'll be hunting coyote with my AR15. I see coyotes as more fun to hunt.

Wish the state would do away with rifles east of 281. I understand using a rifle out in the Sandhills but way too many road hunters in eastern part of the state with mile roads. Makes it hard to find a true giant here as too many shoot the first set of horns they see. It also makes it dangerous for those of us in the trees.

Muzzleloader best of both worlds. Rifle during rut is just so damn easy but I don't fault those that do it. As others have said a bow from a tree stand isn't any more fair than a rifle. And damnit humans are at the top of the food chain and God intended it that way. Just make sure you harvest legally and eat what you harvest.

I don't think it's fair they don't let the cattle know they are about to be killed in the packing houses. Maybe they should make it more of a sport with their bare hands. I'm sure you don't eat meat that wasn't killed with your bare hands though.

I've got plenty of sympathy for deer, or other animals. I'd much prefer they get killed as efficiently and painlessly as possible. I'd rather see rifle hunting than bow or muzzle loaded, and any of those options are probably better then road kill or disease.

I've killed a lot of ringneck, bobwhites, and walleye...but only 1 deer with a bow..
I'd like to kill a big buck with a rifle though.

Not to mention, being accurate with a rifle is not as easy as people seem to think. It's not like the thing shoots a laser beam. You have to compensate for drop, wind, etc.. It takes a bit of skill.

LEO only and these perform best with night vision scope/device in dark surroundings...many states allow deer hunting 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. Most laser devices are visible in the daylight but mine are pretty week in bright sunlight....nowhere near the price of those above.
I have several red dots and lasers and always use a bolt action rifle with a conventional scope for deer but a red dot would be my choice before a laser.

I've never seen someone hunt with one of those. I'm sure some people do, but they aren't exactly commonplace by any stretch of the imagination. My AR wears a traditional scope with an illuminated dot for low light shooting. My bolt action 22 wears a traditional scope as well, no illumination. And when I said the thing doesn't shoot a laser beam, I meant that bullets don't just travel in a straight line as far out as you can shoot. Ballistics is actually a pretty complicated thing to try to master.
