The wife and I are in the market for a new dishwasher. I wouldn't typically ask on here, other than I know there's a very diverse background of people here with varying degrees of expertise. From doing my research and visiting a few home appliance shops, I think I'm narrowing it down to a GE and a Whirlpool. Ideally wanting to stay under $600-700 and from what I found, both these models seem like pretty decent options. The Whirlpool ranks slightly higher in overall reliability. Any home appliance experts out there that can add any valuable input?

Been told by someone I trust that GE is garbage. Your mileage may vary.

We've been very happy with our LG stainless. Very quiet. We do a ton of dishes and we've had it 8 years now with ZERO problems.

Look at KitchenAid. If a heating element is important to you, this is the way to go. Most of the newer dishwashers do not have a heating element but instead some kind of convection fan that is slower to dry.

My wife got weirdly into the new dishwasher thing when ours threw a main bearing and I realized right quick she cared way more than I did about it, so I was happy to let her have that project. She spent waaaay more than I would have on one ($800????) but she also paid for it so basically I got the best of both worlds on that deal. My advice would be to get a new wife who cares about dishwashers so you don't have to mess with it.

All this and you aren't going to mention which dishwasher she purchased???? (I am building a house, so I am starting to care about these things)

Had the GE and it was garbage. Several repairs within the first year and they ended up delivering a new one to the house- which I wouldn't allow them to install. Had the delivery/installation crew leave the new replacement dishwasher in my garage still in the box - which I promptly sold through Craigslist at a small discount to new. On the advise of others we purchased a Kenmore Elite - which has run flawlessly now for 8 years. Quiet, reliable and dishes come out clean. Hear really good things about Bosch as well.

I know my wife's SOC #, her birthday and bra size, not to mention what her "likes" are...I couldn't tell you what brand dishwasher she bought right now without looking at it, if my life depended on it. I don't sleep with my dishwasher though...

For $800, you should at least have the option to sleep with it.

All I will ad is DO NOT buy anything Electrolux. We bought an Electrolux fridge and a dishwasher 6 years ago, spending way more than I wanted to because the wife liked them. I think the dw was in the $7-800 range. It leaked badly from day one, it went back to Schafers several times leaving us with a hole in the cabinets and no dw. The leak was never fixed and the service guy basically admitted they were just bad product. It was less than 3 years old when the pump went out and they said it wasn't economic to fix. They refunded the cost of the last service call and I went to Home Depot and bought a sub-$400 model (Whirlpool?) that has worked flawlessly. BTW, the Electrolux fridge that cost about three grand is a piece also. The ice maker worked for about 6 months and then quit. From what I read online it's a notorious problem and I decided it wasn't worth fixing if I valued my sanity. We go downstairs to get ice from the 30 year old fridge that was in our house when we bought it. They sure don't make them like they used to.

I figure you might as well buy cheap stuff and plan to replace every 3-5 years.

We have a kenmore elite. It is ok, does a good job but it is leaking now after about 7 years. I like Bosch and Kitchen Aid when we last looked at them. Look at the quietness readings, how they seal, how the baskets are made. Metal covered ones do not last as long as they get cut and rust.

I would never get a GE anything unless it is a range. Complete junk. Whirlpool is decent and will get the job done. I personally would go with a Bosch. Quietest, some of the best washing, some of the best rated. All dishwashers with heating elements will still take 2 - 2 1/2 hours from beginning to dry were as a Bosch with internal water heater will take about 3 hours. I sell appliances for a living so this is what I deal with every day. Hope this helps

Any particular model of the Bosch you would recommend? We have all white appliances in the kitchen so don't need to go the stainless steel route. Appreciate the info...this is why I post these kind of questions in here :)

I'd go with the Bosch ascenta. It's typically around the $550 price range, is 46 decibals, adjustable racks, stainless interior, comes in white, and comes in about 4 different styles.
