Check the commit list. Fully 2/3 of our class at present, is an OL, DL, or TE.

Our next commit is expected to be a 4* caliber DT (Daniels).

Analysis.....if you want to hear about line upgrades at NU, you mostly *won't* be hearing it through committment announcements in the next two months, as they already put their hand up to play for the N. (DL after Daniels will likely be full, and maybe one more OL spot).

You just haven't been paying attention Mr. "Give me some more lineman" guy. :)

Another weird point about Husker recruiting and the fan base. No one seems freaked out that we have zero DB recruits at this time, which at a glance, would seem to be the bigger issue this late in the cycle.

Not sure it's a huge issue or not. NU has a lot of DB's in the system and really can't offer a lot of early playing time. I have been told NU is being fairly selective at DB and it's not a gigantic priority.

Its actually not an issue.

But for those that follow recruiting only casually enough to clamor for more lineman with 7 on the commit list and another on the way, it would seem to be "big enough" to pop out for even the most casual recruitnik.

Don't forget Brendan Radley-Hiles in 2018

As you know, the volume of DB we have already has eliminated two 4* CB this cycle that wanted to play /start immediately.

While i understand and agree with your post to a large degee there is reason behind us, "need more linemen" people.
5 offensive linemen & 4 defensive linemen start every game that 9 out of 22 starters. thats like 45% or so off the top of my head. so they should take up 45% of your class. plus when your only really 6 deep on O-line it would be a good idea to take 5-6 O-line this year.

I don't have it in front of me but didn't we also take 4 or 5 last year? I could be way off base though.

Wrong. You are not accounting for special teams. If you take 5 OL per class and redshirt them all you will have 25 OL.

In addition to Tuco's comment, Riley basically laid out the minute he got in here, how he builds a roster (X number of guys at Y positions).

The "we need a whole bunch of lineman now after an embarrassing Iowa loss" thing isn't going to change the allocations that have been in place for 2 cycles. Not unless you are willing to cut something else out (ST or otherwise).

I think you'll find that no D1 football team (successful or otherwise), has nearly half its schollies awarded to lineman.

Bama for instance, I count 13 DL and 19 OL (on their roster), for a total of 32. That's a little more than a third.

I actually don't remember the numbers Riley and Banker gave. I think it was 15 DL and 16 OL. Which is one less overall than Bama keeps on the roster. I would expect this number is fairly universal in D1 FB.

Do they have to give 4 year scholarships?

Comparing how many they take year to year is irrelevant. You have to count how many are on the roster. They have players leave early at times. Since they recruit a bunch of top linemen, if a kid isn't playing there they can transfer and play elsewhere or just leave because they aren't playing. The don't carry dudes like D Johnson and Z Hannon for 4 years.

With a 4 year scholarship what choice do you have except carry those guys if they don't want to leave?

BTW, Alabama has 5 OL commits so far - three 5*, a 4* and a 3* :O

The B1G will never be the SEC as far as running players off. So if you want to play the whole attrition battle we will most assuredly lose that.

Despite his demeanor, I think Riley has done more to cull the roster than red veined Pelini ever did.

The coaches tell them you will never play a down at Alabama.

Or they leave early for the NFL.

The simply don't have the number of players there that never see the field that other schools do.

I just counted, they have four seniors. So they will be +1 (or at 20) come spring. They will probably run one or two off. Or maybe they have some NFL early entries.

Of note, Bama has redshirted 9 of their OL at one point or another, on the current roster.

Last years class had 5.. Not horribly necessary unless they are a Greg Johnson, Darnay, lenoir type

I guess I didn't see that a bunch of people were wanting more line recruits. Maybe I wasn't paying attention.

More important than having some exact number, is making sure those on the roster are well-coached, well-practiced, and ready to play when the time comes.

I'm wondering if anyone watched Big Red Wrap Up following the Iowa game and can refresh my memory on what Jay Foreman had to say about the OL following Sean Callahan bringing up OL injuries.

It's where it all starts. Now must develop them
