I'm definitely surprised he went that high, but I did wonder if he might not go higher than projected, mostly due to his size. You just can't teach that frame. If he had the work ethic to go along with it, he probably could have been a first rounder. Imagine if he were in Suh-like shape with his frame, wowsa.

Whoever it is that carries around the stack of cards of 500 reasons to come to Nebraska has one more card after MC and VV got drafted.

I have my fingers and toes crossed for Jano.

Bill has a history of reaching for some players. I hope VV falls into the Logan Mankins camp and not the Tavon Wilson camp.

I was thinking he wouldn't even get drafted. Bill Belichick isn't the kind of coach to waste a pick on Valentine this early in the draft. Belichick will have his attention in a hurry. Winking
Or Maybe Bill knows something a lot of people thought they knew when they said he made the wrong decision. I'm thinking a lot of crow needs to be eaten around here. Maybe Rick Kaczenski also had a clue? imagine that.

Where was he projected to go? The reason people have been critical is because according to his combine results and projections by the experts, this is a clear reach. The experts had him going in the late rounds... Maybe they all need to eat crow too? Imagine that...

The reality is no one knows who will eat crow until he shows what he can do.

Weaknesses
Carries excessive weight in the middle and lacks desired lean muscle mass for his frame. Could get more from his power with proper hand usage. Scouts question effort level in 2015. Slammed by insiders for a lack of conditioning and practice habits. Missed extensive time due to high ankle sprain.
Draft Projection
Rounds 6 or 7
Strengths
Burly calves and and thick legs that look like sacks of grain. Proper study requires viewing of 2014 tape when he was healthy. Can sit down and live in his space. Has power to thrash undersized centers right out of the picture. Able to eat up double teams and roadblock his run fit when he's on his game. Reactive quickness to turn and snap onto running backs attempting to dart past him. Finished with more career sacks than teammate Maliek Collins.

I bet the attention getter, started during the phone call just before he was picked.

Looks like he made the right decision after all

Compared to when he thought was was going to go in round seven or go undrafted, this looks like a better decision. But does getting picked 96th really validate his decision? He probably would have made more money by coming out next year. But VV was very fortunate to go where he did so it's certainly turned out better than anyone predicted.

For some reason, teams like to take flyers with their compensatory picks too. That's what BB did here. With so many teams having already picked defensive linemen and few teams needing nose tackles, it's probable that BB could have picked VV in the late fourth or fifth.

Based on Bill's draft recorded, one can't conclude one way or the other. It's routinely the case that they draft guys around if not ROUNDS before they are expected to go. It happens at least once every other year. Sometimes it works out (Sebatian Vollmer, Deion Branch, Logan Mankins, Matthew Slater), sometimes it doesn't (Tavon Wilson, Ras-I Dowling, Jermaine Cunningham). I will say, though, probably no one in the NFL has a better drafting recorded than Belichick, but when he misses, he often misses on guys that it seemed like they had no business drafting where they did.

BS, no way they cut a 3rd round pick.
It happens all the time. If he works his tail off he'll be fine. The Pats need a big bodied run stuffer, but they'll drop him like a rock if he cops a lazy attitude. Here's to VV having a long healthy career. If anybody can motivate him, the Pats can.

I feel like some people are upset he went as high as he did...

Agree. I don't get where/when he got the stigma of "lazy". Maybe as a freshman. I wish him well. 3 years from now if he can land that 2nd contact we"ll all know if he should have stayed in school.

Which if true - a damn shame. We are sometimes quick to point out our players' perceived faults, but "at the end of the day" they are our players, our family, and you should always root for your family in a big way in whatever they do.

I'm certainly not, just pointing out that where Bill took him is not in anyway a testament to how others - generally - had him ranked. I hope he tears it up and develops into a replacement for Alan Branch.

If I asked you, "what would you think of a college football team that has BOTH defensive tackles that will be drafted into the pro's by the 3rd round, should be pretty salty on defense right?".
