I know little about this year's team. I looked over the roster on huskers.com and wondered who is the big dogs on this team now that Malloy and Rolfzen are gone. Anyone who has watched some of their games this year know who is stepping up to fill their shoes?
Malloy has already been replaced in my opinion. How about the Rolfzen twins and Justine Wong-Orantes? Huge losses from last years team in terms of ability and experience.
Kelli Hunter is back at setter this year. She missed the first couple games with an injury, but has seemed to really find her hitters as of late and has done a great job distributing. Mikaela Foekce(OH)and Briana Holman(MB) are back as the main hitters. Annika Albecht is a senior and has been a pleasant surprise at OH. Lauren Strivins(MB) and Jazz Sweet (OH) are freshmen who are going to be really good. Sydney Townsend has taken over the libero position after JWO graduated and is doing a good job. They are really playing well right now.IMO, Malloy was great last year. No offense to Kadie, but it's not like her an Amber were 1a & 1b. Amber was on a different level than most anyone in the nation. So, who is our go to players so far this year?
Annika Albrecht is having a very good year (especially last couple weeks). Holman was huge in the Penn State game and has been solid. The Freshman (Jazz Sweet and Lauren Stivrins) are both very solid. Kelly Hunter is very strong (she had a few blocks to go along with her normal solid assists tonight). I can never remember the little Brunette gal that is the Libero.... she has been more than solid as well.IMO, Malloy was great last year. Have none of you watched any of their matches?

This is a good team and will be much better by year end. Dont believe the hype, Florida is not even close to being the number one team in the country. I think there are some HS teams in Nebrsaka that can beat some SEC teams.beats MSU in four sets.

Some excellent info in this thread, but to clarify a few points: Sydney Townsend is NOT the libero--Kenzie Maloney is. And if anyone watched the way she and JWO worked together last year (as opposed to watching the ball), Maloney's exceptional play this year would not be a surprise. Townsend is a defensive and serving specialist, and in essence has taken over the role that Maloney played last year. Not only is Albrecht doing excellent work as an outside hitter, but she is playing all six rotations exceptionally well, which is crucial to the team's success. Also, Stivrins is a redshirt freshman, while Sweet is a true freshman, so Stivrins is not a surprise to those who follow the program closely: in practice she often displayed future All American potential.
Ugh. You're right. It is Maloney. Not sure why I said Townsend. This team has become fun to watch because they have hitters all over the court and a very good setter to distribute the ball to them. I think we saw some struggles early because of Hunter missing part of preseason and the first couple games and she took time to learn her new hitters. This team has a good mix of youth and veteran players. Pretty excited for this year and beyond as the recruiting continues to be tremendous and we see offers and commitments from younger and younger players. John Cook has found the type of athlete that he wants in his system and goes out and gets them. Some excellent info in this thread, but to clarify a few points: Sydney Townsend is NOT the libero--Kenzie Maloney is.
