Amid all the doom and gloom on this board (and I admit, I am one of the doom and gloomers right now) there are still 3 games left. We can still make a bowl. USC next week is a winnable game if our defense plays like it did against OSU or CU.

Rhule has an opportunity here to stick it to his critics and shut them up. He has an opportunity to show that “here we go again” Nebraska is a thing of the past. He can show the world that he is not just one more failed Nebraska coach.
He can go to LA and beat USC. How sweet would a victory over the Trojans be right now? It might even give us the momentum to win our last two games as well.

Will we? Personally, I think the program is in internal chaos right now. It can’t be in a good place. Lost 3 in a row. Brought in outside analysts to look over the shoulders of our coordinators which cannot sit well with them no matter what they say publicly. Bringing in analysts is a tacit vote of no confidence or, at the very least, a public relations gesture meant to make the coach look good at the expense of his assistants. Or worst of all, it signals to his assistants (especially Satt) that Rhule is slowly moving into place the factors needed to eventually fire him. None of which signals a healthy program.

None of this is lost on the players either. They too read social media. They understand football. They know what is going down. Player morale cannot be very high right now. All the vibe is negative. All the talk is negative. That hurts morale and I don’t care what the sunshine pumpers say.

There is only one way to flip this script. WIN. And we can start with USC. Will we? I doubt it. But who knows? And winning would be huge for this program right now. Nebraska football cannot afford yet another 5-7 season. Rhule needs to put up or shut up.
USC is also not doing great. They keep losing one score games and Riley is under a lot of pressure to win. I think we are getting them at a good time. I think we can win IF we can get the offense to not sputter and stop itself.

Before anyone starts bashing and blasting Butler and the secondaries woes this year, think about this, the DBs are having to acclimate to a new coach with a different teaching and coaching style vastly different than Cooper's who resigned outta nowhere back in July and then in comes Butler the 1st part of August and only had 25 days or so to get that secondary ready for the 1st game. Had Butler been here during the winter conditioning and Spring Game this year, people would've seen far better results now. Butler is another elephant in the room and we have to do everything we can to keep him! Don't think for one minute when Butler got hired on here, it didn't get the immediate and undivided attention of the powerhouses of P4 who I guarantee are frothing at the bit to get their hands on a DB coach who's secondaries dominated and were the top in the NFL all 6 years he was with the Bills and with the ability to produce a top secondary 2nd to none in all of P4 whether it be us, or another team. People need to have patience with this as things will get way better. He was also brought in to take over DC whenever White decides to leave which I don't think will be this off season and I for one like White. This is a sizeable elephant in the room besides Satterfield's demise and Holgerson's arrival. How would Husker Nation feel if he were to jump ship and stay in the conference, say going over to tOSU, Oregon or Michigan? People should keep this in mind imo. Butler left the NFL as the top guy at his coaching position to come here.

This is absolute truth @king kong

That just shows what kinda never expert you are and am LMFAO at ya big time. Take a lap.
Teaching coverage technique isn't rocket science. It really shouldn't take more than a season to make a positive impact.

I was hoping they would stick with moss, usc fan been complaining bout the oline..and moss is not mobile...
this new qb is probably more mobile but not sure about his arm..moss has a arm

thats what I hoped our dline could get to their qb...their run game is good but like satterfeild Riley leaves the run game as soon as he can.
maybe our offense can click enough to get 20 points, their defense has improved since grinch left
Moss is probably better for our defense but at the same time Moss has a great arm and makes the most of his receivers who are on par or slightly better than CU and almost as good as OSU. If we can keep them out of rhythm and control the clock we can win. Somehow I feel playing You don't at USC is better for us right now. Their crowd is not typically a major factor.

Unlearning what was taught by Cooper, Butler brings a way different and more complexed style. He's teaching NFL style ball and techniques which is way different than college. NFL players, that's they're 40+ hour a week job of learning and getting that stuff down and players in college is gonna take awhile to get that down as they don't have anywhere near that amount of time so it will take A LOT longer. Like I said, had Butler been here last winter and the spring game? The secondary would way farther along than they are now. Next year, this secondary will be pretty damn good! Coop resigned in July and Butler got here early August and only had 25 days or so to work with the seconday.

I don't give a shit about the fact that we have a new secondary coach. It is now game 10 in the season. Enough time to have guys in proper position and proper schemes. The fact is, we lack both experienced depth and front line talent in the secondary. Tommi Hill is allegedly our best corner? Yikes. And Hartzog is hot and cold. This is a defense that is the worst third and long defense I have ever seen. If I were an opposing coach I would love being 3rd and 20 against our defense.

This has to improve if we are to beat USC. They have great receivers. I don't care what their record is. Remind me, what was UCLA's record? And they sliced and diced our secondary. And we certainly cannot count on the offense to score more than 14 points so we had better play lock down defense. And a few turnovers from the defense would be sweet.

He doesn't have an opportunity to shut anybody up. He has lost three winnable games, two where obviously bad coaching was the problem. If he wins out, people will just wonder why we had to wastes fan's time and money to lose winnable games, including getting destroyed by Indiana just for him to figure out obvious problems. Why was Satt retained when could have just hired the consultants that he brought in after he was embarrassed? Rhule won't come back from this...win out, even win a bowl game and you likely still lose Tony, and nobody will trust Rhule again when he takes 65 million guarenteed for himself and then brings in the worst offensive coaching staff in the nation, when giving a large coaching pool. He was, is, and always will be scamming.

PS: This isn't about a team getting better, developing. This is about Rhule taking the most talented team at NU in 10 years and wasting that talent on absolute shiite coaching, coaches who are his buddies and dragging it out every week like they aren't the problem...only to finally get exposed by a 2 win team. Most of us can tell the difference between coaches who are coaching a team up, that is improving(UCLA), and a team full of talent that is being wasted on incompetence.(NU).

Defense has only given up 30 in regulation once this year, and that was in a game where the offense had 5 turnovers. Any focus on the defense just distracts from the offense that is SOOOOOOO bad. Most of the defensive problems also stem from the offense not being able to sustain drives, while the defense is a bend but don't break style.

We fix the O for the next few games as we're just trying to get a bowl game, we'll be fine. The Blackshirts are far from the problem that plagues this team.

now THIS is doom and gloom!!

@SkulzNBonz

And you are an expert until you're not then disappear for five years.

That was last year with poor coaching and a shitty scheme. It's 2018, new and far better coaches and coaching which is light years better than the previous staff and a new scheme. Frost and co have seen the best passing games there are in FBS, This conference has nowhere near the Passing Offense juggernaughts that Chinander coached against the past couple of years. I think the Blackshirts are gonna eat Passing O's for lunch in this conference. End of story. I also think we will be pretty stout against the run as well. I'm calling my shot here, The Blackshirts this year or until the Offense gets it's footing with be the strength of this Husker team!

Haven't disappered, just lurked. I'm on Hail Varsity or 247 most of the time. Just a hint, there are quite a few true insiders on Hail Varsity and a few that were run off here on there. Better content and better and more knowlegeable posters! I might just be back in another 5 years to see how much more these boards and posters here on Rivals has degraded! LOL

I'm not confident at all in our chances of finishing well. Here are some numbers - the relevance to this year's team is largely immaterial, but it sure impacts my confidence:

Our combined record over the last 3 games of the season since our bowl-less streak started in 2017 = 6-16
Our last 3 games against USC = 0-3
Our last 10 games against Wisconsin = 0-10
Our last 9 games against Iowa = 1-8

Chances to win from here on out based on the Massey ratings (I think)....

At USC. 19% chance to win
Wisconsin. 33% chance to win.
At Iowa. 15% chance to win.

That is pretty sobering.

This is more in line with what I have seen. USC and Iowa at around 20%, and Wisconsin at 50%.

I like your number for chances against Wisconsin for than Massey's 33%. But knowing this team, the chances of winning will get worse after every loss.

Honestly, I think there are players on this team that have already checked out. That's not a knock on Rhule either. That's a Nebraska football culture thing. We'll have individuals and position groups who will fight down to the last man, but unfortunately there's not enough of those type of kids in the program.

“I think we can win IF we can get the offense to not sputter and stop itself.“ Well yeah, every game but Indiana would have been a win if we just did that one thing,

Indiana gonna get thumped by tOSU and possibly get beat by Michigan this weekend and their Cinderfella will be over

USC has played well at home, Nebraska has not played that well on the road. I don't see Nebraska winning this game. If USC gets ahead by two scores early then the game is probably over.

There’s a few on here that bought in to the preseason Dylan hype that need to take their anti-depressant medication. I’m was surprised by the Indiana game but the rest? Not so much.

And USC is 4-0-1 all time vs Nebraska. There's that too. I hate everything right now.
This is not a great USC team. There is no way the Huskers should be intimidated playing this year's Trojans. I know Nebraska has not been good either, but I believe this is a really good chance to get a win if they play with passion and pride. That is a big "IF". I wish the Iowa game was in Lincoln this year. Same old Iowa team. Kirk playing it close to the vest. Just an ok quarterback who can make 2 or 3 good passes. Rely on their big halfback who UCLA held in check. Everyone here says, "Iowa Sucks". I think they are in the collective heads of the players, coaches, fans and state.

It is possible that USC players are tuning into the hype for upcoming future foes Notre Dame & UCLA and will be mentally unprepared for Nebraska this week.

OTOH, USC might be extra motivated to win for their brand new QB who they stole from Georgia this Spring.

In any event, it’s always enjoyable to watch crybaby Riley lose.
