How was it that Riley was able to take the lowest rated talent in in Pac10 and nearly break OSU 27 year losing streak in 98/99, and then come back and with lowest rated talent in PAc10 have the 3rd best record from in PAc10 from 2003-09 ? Dumb luck over 7 seasons?
Why is it that most of the pleasant surprises this year have been this staffs recruits (Spielman, Jaimes, Stille, Dismuke, Bootle, Bryant bf injury, Tanner recently, Caleb, etc..) and most of the disappointments have been upperclassmen excl. Lamar (Newby, Knevel, Hoppes, Reimers, Ketter, Gates, Wilbon, E. Lee (Pelini recruit), King, etc..).
When is the last time one of these "disapointments" even make a single play where you thought "wow, that was pretty good". If they were good and just werent getting development, don't you think just by sheer natural ability you would see them make a play just once in awhile - but they never do.
Maybe the answer is really simple and is that the upperclassmen just aren't that good.
Frosh Speilman is already better than Pierson-El
Frosh Jaimes is already better than Knevel
Frosh Bootle is already better than Lee
Frosh Stille is already better than King
Soph Bryant bf injury was already better than Wilbon
Frosh McQuitty would probably be better than Reimers (1 catch)
Soph Caleb is developing quickly
In about a year, year and a half:
A couple of Frosh TE (allen, stoll, radfal, englehaupt) will be better Hoppes/Ketter ever were
Roberts will be better than Weber ever was
Thomas will be better than Stoltenberg ever was
etc.....etc... without even considering all the other guys (Gebbia, Bookie, Farniok, Moore, McQuitty, Daniels, etc..)
Maybe the reason our upperclassmen are not that good has alot less to do w/ player development and more to do with the fact they they were just really never that good in the first place (as evidence by their lack of scholarship offers).
