UPDATE: 7:30 PM 9/13/20
As you can imagine, the last several weeks have been a blur for our family. From the day Mario was shot until yesterday's funeral, it felt as though time has stood still. While it is still very difficult to accept that he is gone, there is some peace in knowing he is laid to rest. Carrie and the kids have been blessed to have the support of family, friends, the police department, the surrounding communities and the entire country during this tragedy. There are so many people to thank. There have been care packages, food donations, financial support, volunteers to take care of everyday tasks, fundraisers, etc. The list goes on and on. Carrie is forever grateful. I write this on her behalf as it would literally be impossible for her to individually send a thank you card to every one of you. She wants you to know she is in the process of opening and reading every single card sent to her. Please accept this last caring bridge post as an individual ‘thank you’ from Carrie, Carlos, Olivia, Adelina and Celia, as well as all of our extended family. While things did not end the way we had all hoped, we are forever grateful for the help along the way.

UPDATE : 9:00 AM 9/7/20
It is with a very heavy heart that I have to pass on devastating news. At approximately 3:30 this morning, Mario died. Carrie and his 4 amazing children were able to be with him. I am at a loss for words as we try to process this. Please pray for Carrie, his kids and our entire family.

UPDATE: 10:45 PM 9/6/20
Please pray right now.

UPDATE:10:00 PM 9/4/20

The doctors wanted Mario's body to just rest today, and that is what he did. These past few days I have used the term 'no news is good news' quite a bit. Today feels like good news, as there is not much to report. While we are anxious for quick progress, we know that is not how this race is going to go. From day one, the doctor said this is not a sprint, but rather a marathon. We all have to be patient so Mario can finish this race. Thank you for your vigilance of prayer.

UPDATE: 8:00 PM 9/2/20

I very cautiously say that today was another relatively good day. Mario had his surgery to look at the health and clotting ability of his liver. While his liver still has a ways to go to be doing it's job properly, the doctor said that what he wanted to happen during surgery is what happened (in regards to his liver). We now wait again and pray that this part of his body continues to heal, while the doctors decide on next steps. We can hear your prayers and so can Mario.

UPDATE: 9:30 PM 8/31/20
Today was not fun.

Mario continued to have his ups and downs today. However, he is still fighting. As the doctors have told my sister, patients often take 2 steps forward and 1 step back. The backwards steps are hard.

Please keep Mario, Carrie and the kids in your prayers. We are blown away by worldwide support. We have been told there are groups praying for Mario as far away as Israel. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

As a family, we are humbled.

God Bless.

UPDATE: 9:00 PM 8/30/20

Today's procedures indicate that Mario's liver needs more time to hopefully heal before any decisions are made on next steps. The doctors would like his body to continue to rest for the next several days as his system works to balance itself. He is still critically ill and in need of all your prayers. Our hearts continue to be warmed by this amazing community and all that love being poured out to Mario and the family. God bless you all.

UPDATE:10:50 PM 8/29/20

Was a crazy day. Thank you to the small restaurant “Chopsticks”. It was Mario’s favorite place to eat. 50% of all proceeds went to the family. Due to the high volume of customers, they had to stop taking orders. Thank you. We see you.

The surgery originally scheduled for today was postponed until tomorrow morning. The doctors want to optimize his system before surgery. The exploratory surgery tomorrow will be to get an updated assessment of his liver. The family continues to be humbled by the outcry of support from the community. Please keep the prayers coming.

UPDATE: Last last night. 8/29/20

Per my wife ....

One more quick update as this day ends. Forgive me if I do not always use the correct medical terminology, as this is a foreign language to me. :) Mario has held steady today after his surgery last night. The doctors have put him on temporary dialysis to relieve some of the stress on his kidneys. Carrie said his color looks much better today. They have him heavily sedated, to keep him comfortable and keep him from moving. Today they wanted him to rest as they plan on another surgery tomorrow. I believe this will be to take another look at his liver function and probably other things I can't remember. We are all taking one day at a time, and grateful for each day Mario takes towards getting out of critical condition. God bless you all. The power of your thoughts and prayers are real.

Mario is now at UNMC. He is making progress but still listed in critical condition.

Due to the outpour of support from across the country, another donation option has been set up through Go Fund Me for the Herrera family. We are absolutely blown away by all of you.

UPDATED: 9:25 AM 8/28/20
Mario underwent another surgery late last night after his arrival at UNMC. A new chest tube was installed for drainage. Additional work on his liver was performed, and this is still an area of great concern. As of this morning, the nurse reports 'Mario is doing ok, relatively.' His blood pressure is low and being treated with meds.

He is still in critical condition. More info listed in the caring bridge link below.

UPDATED: 8:12 PM. 8/27/20
Mario has been life flighted to UNMC in Omaha due to their ability to handle many of the internal injuries he has. He is still in critical condition. We thank you for all the personal messages asking what can people do to help this family.

We have created a Caring Bridge site to update family and friends on his progress. If anyone wants to give a donation to the family, there are two ways to donate. It is listed in Caring Bridge page.
