Ughhh....wife wants to watch the Oscars

I wouldn't complain about a wardrobe malfunction, but I honestly enjoy watching. I've always loved movies, and somehow I've managed to not let politics overwhelm and ruin every aspect of my life.
ok. I couldn't help but notice a photo from the red carpet on my home page that at least made me check out the red carpet photos. I can't watch a bunch of Hollywood types lecture us on politics though. I hate to puke so I just avoid it. It's sad because it ruins some of their movies for a lot of people who otherwise enjoy them.

What I don’t understand is why these people think we care about their political opinions. Who cares? They stand in front of a camera and play pretend for a living. How does that qualify them to carry any weight whatsoever on important issues?

You mean like all of us on this messageboard that do whatever we all do for a living and are apparently qualified to run a power 5 division I football program?

Yeah but our business cards, or advertising, or bill of sales don't include a subjective lecture on any given topic...

I enjoy pontificating, over-hyped, self-congratulatory, virtual signalling, progressive leftist loons as much as the next person but I have to be honest. I thought the Oscars were fairly tame this year as far as politics go. Maybe it just so ingrained that without a Ricky Gervais to burst their little self-important bubbles, it is just the new normal.

Typical silly garbage from a silly group that takes themselves too seriously. I guess I've just learned to tune them out. I mean, they have an entire award season to self-bestow awards upon themselves and then complain that they aren't diverse enough while giving them to themselves. Who exactly are the complaining too, anyway? I mean how weird can it get really?

But I digress!

Not to worry though everyone! The latest Oscars was the lowest rated in history (a few other recent years were also the lowest of their time). It is approaching half of the viewers that used to watch it even 15-20 years ago. Most people have had enough I think.

Glad to see this board has a newfound hatred for political gasbagging. If people actually practice what they preach, maybe our moderators will get a well-deserved break.

No. They only hate it if it runs counter to their unflappable beliefs. They have no problem with the practice if it's something that they agree with. I think it's called confirmation bias.

The absolutely hilarious part of all of this is, Donald Trump is the President of the United States of America because he is.... wait for it.... A CELEBRITY. Millions of people absolutely care what Brad Pitt, etc. says because they agree with them, just as it is for the other side with Trump. If Pitt, Clooney, Oprah or any of another half dozen ran for President they'd instantly be the front runner for the Democratic nomination. Politicians are basically actors, they just have elections instead of award shows.

Face it, we're all a bunch of hypocrites. Some of us know it, others are clueless.

Outside of the Super Bowl, basically every recurring TV program in existence is a fraction of the viewers it was 15-20 years ago. So good point.

I think the virtue signalling is the main reason people (like me) have grown tired of Hollywood. I used to be a big fan of movies, and now I go to only a few a year in the theater. All too many of the actors are very happy to tell me why I am a scumbag for not caring about global warming or eating meat. Rick Gervais took a blowtorch to that industry at the Golden Globes and it was hilarious. I would actually gain an ounce of respect for just ONE actor/actress/director/producer or freaking gaffer to get on the Oscar stage and say that pedophilia in Hollywood is all too common and those guilty need to be put in prison. That doesn't seem like a tough opinion to spout, but oddly nobody in Hollywood names names. Hell, the face of #metoo was an open joke among Hollywood until he fell out of favor with them for whatever reason. Harvey Weinstein was viewed as the Devil and everyone laughed about it for years. Hell, Meryl Streep has publicly said great things about both Weinstein and child rapist Roman Polanski. Should we cancel culture her into turning in her Oscars? I am still waiting for any "A" list actor or actress talk out loud about getting a role when they were 14 after being sold to the producer by their parents. Corey Feldman ain't exactly A list.

Yeah, you're right.. I would much rather watch an angry old racist, who pollutes the airwaves with his brand of hateful divisiveness, receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Those are the moments I'm so very thankful that I pay that cable bill each month.

Yes folks, the medal that was previously bestowed upon the likes of Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr., Walt Disney, Jonas Salk, Karl Menninger, and Michael Jordan, is now hanging from neck of Rush Limbaugh (aka Rash Limburger).

Not that it can be substantiated, within the black morass of people I've worked with; I had one tell me that his brother worked for Hollywood and confirmed everything. Told me all the stars are ****ing their way up. Told me what we fear most about kids is true.

What did he do to receive it? Play basketball well?

This medal isn't limited to medicine or literature or entertainment, etc.. Athletes can receive it too. And when it comes to athletics, what better recipient than MJ?

Sounds stupid. Stop wasting my tax dollars on this crap.

Limbaugh should not be getting that award. Blowharding on the airwaves for decades isn't worthy of recognition.

Speaking of blowharding for decades, Joe Biden has received one. Not sure what for. Selling White House access to the Ukraine for personal gain maybe?

Who's going to receive it next? Jane Fonda? Ethel Rosenberg?

The ironic part is that Rush wanted a medal for smoking cigars.
“I’m just saying there ought to be a little appreciation shown for them, instead of having them hated and reviled,” Limbaugh said. “I would like a medal for smoking cigars, is what I’m saying.”

Rush denies smoking risks

Is it true Walt Disney was anti-Semitic?

I guess better to recognize someone for a few bucks, rather than spending millions of our tax dollars on travel and security while working on 'his' backswing and putting stroke.

Rush is known for more than just being a complete gas bag. He is a racist. Have you read some of the things he has said on air? Disgusting..

Not true. I like Brad Pitt as an actor and absolutely wanted him to win for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But I don’t give a f@&& about his political beliefs. I didn’t watch the Oscars. Joaquin Phoenix...great actor but he’s borderline incoherent on talk shows and interviews. Why would I care about what HE said about cows? Oh and that goes for celebs that lean the other way too. Not going to get all riled up about what “The Rock” has to say about our economy or foreign affairs.

I honestly did not care one way or the other about it, at all. I was being a dork....but that word is thrown around to much and i'm kinda numb to it now.

Maybe this will make you reconsider your stance on Rush L...

Rush Limbaugh's racist comments..

1. “Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?”

Source

2. “Right. So you go into Darfur and you go into South Africa, you get rid of the white government there. You put sanctions on them. You stand behind Nelson Mandela — who was bankrolled by communists for a time, had the support of certain communist leaders. You go to Ethiopia. You do the same thing.”

Source

3. “Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.”

4. “The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.”

Source

5. “They’re 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?”

Source

6. [To an African American female caller]: “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.”

Source

7. “I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve.”

8. Limbaugh’s many attacks on Obama.

Limbaugh has called Obama a ‘halfrican American’ has said that Obama was not Black but Arab because Kenya is an Arab region, even though Arabs are less than one percent of Kenya. Since mainstream America has become more accepting of African-Americans, Limbaugh has decided to play against its new racial fears, Arabs and Muslims. Despite the fact Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law school, Limbaugh has called him an ‘affirmative action candidate.’ Limbaugh even has repeatedly played a song on his radio show ‘Barack the Magic Negro’ using an antiquated Jim Crow era term for Black a man who many Americans are supporting for president. Way to go Rush.

So Rush Limbaugh has managed to make racist attacks on four of the most admired and respected people of African descent in the past one hundred years, in Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Colin Powell and Barack Obama. He has claimed that Joe the Plumber, who isn’t even a plumber is more important in this election than Colin Powell, a decorated military veteran who has served honorably in three administrations. How can the Republican party stand by this man and let their candidates appear on his show? Rush Limbaugh’s comments are so racist, they’re funny, in a Borat, Archie Bunker kind of way. What is not funny is the millions of dittoheads who listen to him, who take in and re-spout all the racist rhetoric that he spits. Limbaugh’s statements are echoed in the racist, angry Palin/McCain supporters who shout ‘kill him,’ ‘terrorist,’ ‘communist,’ ‘traitor,’ ‘socialist’ and ‘off with his head.’

9. “We need segregated buses… This is Obama’s America.”

Source

10. “Obama’s entire economic program is reparations.”

What’s not true? You don’t want to listen to Brad Pitt’s political views, cool. No argument. But several others were saying why do they think “we” or “anyone” wants to listen to their views. All I said was millions of people do. I’d rather file my teeth than listen to Trump, but I know that for millions of people it’s what they live for. Fine, I’m not gonna whine about it.

That word doesn't move the needle for me at all anymore. Zero, nada, zilch. Bar has been lowered so far for it to be used in recent times that I'm 100% numb to it...maybe people really should have thought that thru before proclaiming every single person they didn't agree with, to be one.

The same thing has happened with the way the word socialist is thrown around, which has now numbed an entire generation against the historical consequence of real socialism. It's led to the embracement by many of someone who is a declared socialist.
