I have never seen something like this, ever. Not on TV. radio, newspapers, billboards, city buses, bus stops. Nowhere. Makes me wonder...is NU having problems selling out Memorial Stadium? Hmmm.

No shit Sherlock. The sellout streak has really been done for 10 years. Just friends of the program keeping it alive at this point.

But I thought they expanded the stadium because the demand was there.........................

Watching a game from those seats is awesome, heckuva view. Got to sit up there for the spring game and really enjoyed it. But in terms of the sellout streak, completely unnecessary.

Yep, the new seats just moved people from the North Stadium.

The expansion of the stadium was more than necessary (meaning too much), fine to add the club seats and skyboxes on the east but the seating area above should never have been built.

Saw that this morning and was kind of surprised how public of a statement that was. Wonder of that is without having to make a seat donation?

It was dead in the 80s also. My uncle used to get tickets by the fist full. All from companies that agreed to buy the unsold tickets.

This is the most aggressive I have seen but then again I don't blame people at all. I hardly ever go into the games anymore but I almost always head to Lincoln or watch the games with friends at the bars in Omaha.

Now is a great time to secure season tickets. This year is going to be something special.

As would I (referring to changing out benches to seats). However to do this would likely (actually certainly) force a complete re-seating of the stadium, of course then they could also increase the donation requirements to offset the cost of this type of project too.

here is a hypothetical .. what would people have preferred ?

1. emphasis on maintaining sell out streak --- kept capacity at 80-85K
2. be able to pack in 100K for big time games but lose the sell out streak

I would rather see 100K for an Oregon, OSU, Michigan etc and be willing to lose the sellout with only 80K for Wyoming

Actually on point 2 they would probably tell the fanbase that the streak is still in place even though it is easy to see it isn't.

Stadium expansion could be argued is a slap to the face to all the corporations and people who bought up the extra tickets to maintain the sellout streak. I could not, for the life of me, come up with a reason to expand the stadium and thought it to be such a stupid idea I have to wonder how somebody sold NU on the idea.

You leave the benches in for the students, or remove them completely as they stand anyway.

Every season ticket holder gets a one time charge for the cost of their seat. Can't be too much money for a seat. Those that don't donate the going rate for their section get reseated to less desirable areas.

Capacity probably drops back intro the 80,000 range

When you consider the modest success of the program over the past 15 years, I think it is amazing that the recently expanded stadium is ever full, no matter what helping hand is extended by big boosters. "Wait until next year" is getting a little old for even the most rabid fans.

Living in the Phoenix area, I have watched Sun Devil Stadium with huge empty sections for about the same period of time -- and a similar drop-off in on field success -- and ASU's solution is to greatly reduce seating during the current remodel. Of course, Phoenix has added several pro sports to dilute the fan base, but the biggest factor has been more than a decade of mediocre success, much like what has happened in Lincoln. Fortunately for NU, there isn't much competition from other sports or we would surely see a similar issue.

The biggest slap in the face was the previous, continued expansions of end zone seating to the point over half of the seats were there. At least the latest expansion added quality, sideline views. Hopefully the next upgrade will be to improve quality of end zone seating, meaning remove about 10,000 seats in the endzones and add a couple inches of legroom and/or hip room.

I would ask why does maintaining the sell out streak have to factor into the decision to determine seating capacity.

It should be business - ie money - related --- is there increased value with stadium expansion despite potentially losing the sell out streak?

The question shouldn't be "what is the maximum capacity for the stadium while maintaining the sellout streak" but rather "at what capacity is the revenue/expense ratio maximized"

In a rational world you are right. But many times even in the business world, we make sacrifices for irrational reasons. One of them bring pride and another being tradition.

In this case, Nebraska took great pride in having the sell out streak. It became part of their fabric. I don't blame them. It fits a narrative of the best fans in football.

I think while there may be a financial motivation to increase to 110,000 seats for big games, the long term fabric would be eroded.

I believe the sell -out streak will end in my lifetime but it won't be because of a business issue. I think fan interest is waning and the game experience at home is simply beating the in stadium experience right now

With the influx of cash headed our way in 2017 they should just eliminate the donations for the end zone seats and I would guess they would sell those out. It's expensive enough to drive to Lincoln and spend money on food and gas for the average Joe and then expect them to pay a donation as well on top of the price of the tickets.

Well I agree with the OP. Article in LJS today said they have about 2K season tickets that will go on sale in a week (June 1). Additions aside, I can't recall in my lifetime ever reading that in the newspaper...

Nobody asked me but things that are different today about attending husker games vs years past:
1. TV experience; better production, people are paying more for TV service (leaving less to pay again to watch it in person), spends thousand's on TV, comfort/cheapness of watching in your own home
2. Costs to attend game have increased: parking, donations, concessions, hotels, etc.
3. tailgate atmosphere; this draws some to the stadium area but one of three people I talk to don't actually "go" to the game
4. Lack of positive results for extended period of time; all fans are fair weather at some level. Winning truthfully does solve most of this
5. Crappy schedule (we should improve #4 above :) in 2016; For the most part this isn't that controllable (we don't set our conf schedule)

If we have a good year (win more than 8/9 games), this won't be a problem next year as our home slate in 2017 is very appealing. They (UNL ticket staff) needs to reward fans who are loyal. I'm aware they have a point system and all that, but they really need to do even more to reward fans who pay high donations, and have done so for many, many years...

GBR
