Here are some quick notes and observations to pass along from Nebraska's half-padded practice on Tuesday afternoon inside the Hawks Championship Center and fields north of Memorial Stadium…

***Here are the players who sat out of Tuesday practice with various injuries: Josh Banderas,Alex Lewis, Trey Foster, Matt Snyder, Peyton Newell, Jalin Barnett, Brandon Reilly, Chris Jones and Sam Burtch.

***Head coach Mike Riley said Lewis was dealing with a bruised knee but should be fine. Banderas pulled a groin as is listed as day-to-day. Foster sprained his ankle and is week-to-week. Snyder an an elbow infection that needed to be drained, but Riley said the freshman tight end was already expected to redshirt this season.

***The good news is Riley said Jones and Burtch were getting "pretty close" to returning to action after meniscus surgeries, and Taariq Allen was back at practice after missing the past couple weeks with a shin injury. Chris Weber also returned practice Tuesday.

***Riley also confirmed that true freshmen Aaron Williams, Dedrick Young, Stanley Morgan, Devine Ozigbo, Tyrin Ferguson, Antonio Reed, and Jordan Ober would all play right away this season.

***Along with Snyder, Riley said Jordan Stevenson would likely redshirt this season, but said things could always change down the line.

***Offensive lineman Dwayne Johnson, who is on scholarship but was left off the 105-man roster to open fall camp, has rejoined the team this week when the full team reported for the start of the fall semester

Nebraska practiced for just less than two hours in shorts and shoulder pads on Tuesday afternoon, as the season opener with BYU continued to creep closer.

— Nebraska head coach Mike Riley said that a number of Husker players are battling injuries, including MIKE linebacker Josh Banderas, offensive tackle Alex Lewis and tight end Trey Foster.

— Wide receiver Taariq Allen returned to practice on Tuesday, and Riley said he is optimistic that Nebraska could soon get wide receiver Sam Burtch and cornerback Chris Jones back as well.

— Riley said Lewis is battling a bruise on his knee, and “should be fine, as the pain goes away.” David Knevel is Lewis’ backup.

— Foster sprained his ankle and was wearing a walking boot at practice. Riley said he will be “week-to-week” with the injury.

— Banderas is nursing a pulled groin muscle and will be “day-to-day.”

Michael Rose said that if Josh Banderas missed any time, he wouldn’t slide over to MIKE and Tyrin Ferguson or Chris Weber would be in charge of manning the MIKE spot.

— Riley said that Nebraska will use the fullback more with limited depth at tight end. Freshman Matt Snyder will redshirt, and is out for a stretch of time because of an infected elbow. “Andy (Janovich) is a good football player so we can morph those things together,” Riley said.

— Riley named the freshmen who will definitely play this year: Aaron Williams, Dedrick Young, Stanley Morgan, Devine Ozigbo, Antonio Reed, Tyrin Ferguson. Though Riley didn’t name him, expect longsnapper Jordan Ober to play as well.

— Riley said he has had 3-7 freshmen play in the past, and said the players he named are “ready, and have had their chance to prove themselves physically and mentally.”

— Riley said that as of now, running back Jordan Stevenson is a redshirt candidate, though that could change.

— Riley said that all of the running backs will be contributors on special teams. “A guy can initially gain value to play for making that part of the game important,” Riley said. “That group is full of guys who are good special teams players.”

— Riley said that after reviewing film of Saturday’s game film, he liked what Tommy Armstrong did, and the throws he made, ticking off several throws he liked. “He made some big-time throws in that scrimmage,” Riley said.

— Accounting for BYU’s blitzes will be key for Nebraska, Riley said. “They will blitz you from the bleachers,” he said.

— Riley said he is confident in his offensive line’s ability to protect Tommy Armstrong, and said now the focus is on assignments.

Of the 7 true freshmen scheduled to play for Nebraska this year, not 1 of them was a 4-star recruit according to 247 Composite service

Yikes...for those that follow this more closely, who of that group were Riley-initiated targets vs holdovers he held on to?

At this rate they're going to be pulling students from the stands to fill positions on the field.

Aaron Williams and Antonio Reed are the ones that stand out the most for me. It was Avery Anderson and Eric Lee that were suppose to start from the get go... at least that is what the reports said...

Whatever; you mean since he had all fall too initiate new contacts ?

It was a basic question for those that follow it more closely than I. I know there were some offers from Riley that raised some eyebrows on here, just wondering if any of those true freshman fell into that group.

Chill out, no agenda here. Why the attitude?

Yes.

- D. Ozigbo
- A. Reed
- T. Ferguson (Due to flipping from OSU)

This gets a thumbs up from me.. glad to see the return of the Fullback

You ever see that cat wrestle? Good lord...I coached against some of his brothers/family members...those guys were studs.

I grew up with a couple of his older brothers and my younger brother graduated with Andy. His brothers were/are great athletes (and the youngest sibling is the only girl and she is hell of an athlete too). We used to have to keep extra facemasks for one of them because he would break them about every third game. And I don't mean cracked it a little, I mean one of the bars sticking straight out broken or holding part of it in his hands broken. The guy played angry.

Future is bright at the DB position if both are redshirted this year. A year to learn and 4 more years....could be scary with those two on the outside.

I know I've read here that Aaron Williams was the forgotten man of the early enrollees, and you'd read good reports about him even through the spring.

Also, how much of that is a depth at S vs. depth at CB thing as well?

I think thats a big part of it. We are much deeper at CB than Safety.

I think some of it safety depth. Leroy Alexander is gone, Charles Jackson doesn't seem to be back to what we expected. McKewon has reported that Gerry has looked very good but not really great this fall and nobody else (including Cockrell) has looked better than good. Sounds like Aaron Williams has looked exceptionally good for a true freshman, but he is still a true freshman.

Let's just wait and see what happens on the field. I have a hard time taking any writers opinions to heart when evaluating players. Some of their opinions may play out, but I think we will be fine at the safety spot.

I should have said "overlooked" instead of forgotten of the early enrollees...you'd see good reports about him, but not the same level of press that Anderson and Lee were receiving.
