Tuesday notebook: Huskers see bright future with Lindsey
*** Linebacker Luke Gifford (hip) suited up but was limited for Tuesday's practice. Cornerback Eric Lee again did not practice as he continues to go through concussion protocol.
*** Freshman running back Jaylin Bradley, who missed all of last week due to an ankle injury he suffered at Purdue, fully practiced on Tuesday.
*** Safeties Aaron Williams (neck) and Antonio Reed (knee) both fully practiced for the second day in a row on Tuesday after sitting out of the Northwestern game.
***Defensive coordinator Bob Diaco went nearly 24 minutes in post-practice media session, addressing his postgame comments from Saturday evening. He said the defense can't win when there are so many mistakes, including penalties on defense and special teams and turnovers by the offense.
*** Diaco said players were frustrated and flat-out confused during spring ball trying to adjust from former defensive coordinator Mark Banker's adjusted "rugby-style" tackling. He outlined how the new defensive staff had to, for all intents and purposes, completely overhaul the tackling technique.
*** Diaco pointed out that Nebraska is 12 points away from being 7-2 as opposed to 4-5. (He was referring to a regulation tie with Northwestern, a touchdown loss to Oregon, and a four-point loss to Northern Illinois.)
*** Diaco reiterated the process of the staff learning to work together was a big factor in the learning curve of the defense. He said the death of safeties coach Bob Elliott was disruptive in the progress of the defense.
*** Diaco hasn't talked with new athletic director Bill Moos yet, but he sees Moos as someone who understands football from a player, coach and administrator standpoint.
*** In perhaps the most interesting comment of the session, Diaco said he considers former head coach Bo Pelini a friend a sees him as a great coach. He called Pelini and Riley opposites, but said they're both "beautiful" people.
*** Junior nose tackle Mick Stoltenberg said he hasn't noticed a huge difference in the style of Minnesota's offense under first-year head coach P.J. Fleck. He noted how committed the Gophers are to the run game and stopping that will certainly be a priority.
*** Stoltenberg said Diaco has taught him two key things this season when it comes to watching film: To be objective about the tape and honest about the evaluation.
*** Stoltenberg said he knows the team has underperformed. He said he knows the team's goals and knows they're better than this, but they want to focus on just playing winning football moving forward.
*** One common theme among players and coaches was the recognition of the importance of stopping Minnesota running backs Shannon Brooks and Rodney Smith. Linebackers coach Trent Bray said it would be a big game for his unit because the Gophers may be close to 80 percent run in the weather.
*** Defensive line coach John Parrella said he had no regrets in redshirting nose tackle Damion Daniels for his freshman season. Parrella said he believes Daniels will be a special player in the defense.
*** Redshirt freshman tight end Jack Stoll said his original goal was to make the travel roster for this season, which he did for Oregon. Stoll said he's learned a lot from senior tight ends Tyler Hoppes and Connor Ketter and their effort and speed in practice. He credits those seniors as the reason he's playing meaningful snaps.
*** Junior running back Devine Ozigbo was voted UNL's favorite male athlete in a student poll, an award which he attributed to his disposition to always try and make friends. In the poll, senior wideout De'Mornay Pierson-El took home second place and senior kicker Drew Brown came in third.
