Tony White interviews at SDSU

Thx for the updates
Stephen Colbert Middle Finger GIF by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

I randomly caught the end of their game the other night. It looked like there were like 300 people there at the end. I know the dream for some is to be a HC and then move up to a blue blood some day if all goes well, but man would coaching in that kind of environment be a downer. I would take DC coaching in front of our crowd any day.

Aren’t they building SDSU a new stadium where the Chargers demolished stadium was?

If my memory serves, SDSU is going to be without a conference soon. If that's true, he'd be nuts to go there.
Mountain West should have about the same status it has now - which isn’t lofty, but at least it’s still a conference. If they add Oregon State and Washington State, that would even be a modest bump.

That said, I sure hope White stays.

You would think if Toledo, James freaking Madison, and Liberty could make the top 25, a solid coach could convince enough of just Pac-12 / Mountain West area athletes to come on board and make SD State a bit of a power.

Good luck to him. He's earned it and he wants to be a HC but he's walking away from a loaded D next year. He will get Brent Venebles types of offers after Year 2 with Rhule.
Agree, think it would be a mistake for him to make the move now. He has almost everyone coming back on D for him next season. Besides the weather, not sure much of an upside right now for him. He waits a year, has similar type success next season and he will walk into a 6 or 7+ million/year job somewhere.

The same Brent Venables who was defensive coach of 3 national championships and 13 conference championships? Perhaps I'm misreading your post, or I have the wrong Brent Venebles, but I don't think one more year with 5-7 Rhule at Nebraska is going to quite equate to the same resume.

I love TW and hope he stays for sure, but we faced exactly 2 teams this year with half a pulse on offense and we gave up over 80 points to them. Next year, we're likely to face more like 4-5 of those teams. His stock is as likely to fall as it is to rise. And either way, his resume's not even in the same hemisphere as Brent Venebles.

Ya a little overzealous in my post. Point is, with another solid year as DC, he will have better suitors.

He would have a better chance at landing a major P5 HC job and boosting his HC stock by coaching elite defenses here for a few years than being a HC @ SDSU. Most, if not all elite HC jobs are occupied by former coordinators that made a direct jump into a major HC job... Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning, Venables, Lincoln Riley, Sarkesian.. etc. It would actually be less likely to get a major P5 HC job by being a HC at a lower level FBS school.

The only reason you take the SDSU job is if it is your dream job.

Might depend on whether SDSU decides to step up the compensation. Hoke was reportedly making $1.27 mil, which ranked 8th in the Mountain West and was just over half what Craig Bohl is paid at Wyoming.

Not sure about that, I haven't seen them play in a long time. Something tells me they don't play in front of too many sellouts.
That means less pressure on the coach. It will come down to the number of years on the contract and $$. It would be damned tough to turn down 8 years at 1.5 million/year.

It’s really a pretty attractive job for a first time head coach. Recruiting should be fairly easy without crazy fan expectations. The idea that he could leverage the DC job at NU in to a top P5 job is probably a little far fetched IMO.

I see this as a good thing

All those returning starters will make it easy on whoever replaces him and Rhule can bloviate about how people come here and leave better for it with some evidence to back it up

this is the best take here.

additionally, if Tony White is a loser, he leaves now because his stock is at a high.

if he's a winner, he embraces the challenge of the new B1G and looks to boost his resume by shutting down better offenses.

Yeh, I'll bet that's why so many of us who post here have turned down jobs that would have guaranteed us $1.5 to $2 mil per year through the end of the contract. We didn't want to be labeled as losers.

i agree, considering 1.5-2mil/year is what he stands to make as an elite DC

if he's afraid of Oregon, Washington, USC, Michigan, tOSU, etc and wants to tuck tail to a G5 conference, then he's a loser.

Great - show me the offer letter where you turned down that kind of money, and I promise to stop laughing my ass off at what you posted.

Fran Brown is about to be named HC at Syracuse. Elijah Robinson was interim at aTm. Tony White will be a HC very soon. Ruhle's coaching tree on the defensive side of the ball is impressive. And I am confident in his ability to replace White when the time comes, I don't think it will be this year though.

perhaps he has career aspirations.

there is no question succeeding as head coach at SDSU is looked at more favorably by the entire planet than succeeding as DC at NU.

as it should be. much harder job.

if a smaller oil & gas company offered me a 20% increased salary on interview, i would 100% go to the President's office and demand/expect a raise. i would prefer to stay at my current (mid-tier o&g company) as the scope and depth of my responsibility translates better to a future promotion at a larger company.

you're ignoring the gigantic title & responsibility promotion

would you do the same if that smaller oil & gas company offered you the position of President along with the raise?

because that's what we're talking about here.
