1895 - The first professional football game is played in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The Latrobe YMCA defeated the Jeanette Athletic Club 12-0.

1947 - Bill McCahan of the Philadelphia Athletics no-hits the Washington Senators.

1957 - Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves sets the major league record for left-handed pitchers with his 41st shutout.

1965 - Jim Hickman becomes the first player in New York Mets history to hit three home runs in one game.

1966 - Bobby Orr of the Boston Bruins signed his first NHL contract. The two-year deal paid him $70,000 plus a signing-bonus, making him the highest paid player in the league.

1968 - The Chicago White Sox set an American League record with 39 one-run losses on the year.

1970 - Billy Williams ends his National League record consecutive games played streak at 1,117.

1970 - Hall of Fame football coach Vince Lombardi died at age 57 from cancer.

1974 - Frank Robinson was named the first African American manager in major league baseball.

1974 - NBA star Oscar Robertson announces his retirement.

1977 - Japanese baseball star Sadaharu Oh hits his 756th career home run to surpass Hank Aaron as the all-time career home run leader in professional baseball.

1988 - #2 Nebraska defeated Utah State 63-13.

1999 - Mario Lemieux's ownership group officially took over the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. Lemieux became the first player in the modern era of sports to buy the team he once played for.

2000 - Kenny Lofton tied a major league record by scoring in his 18th straight game.

2001 - Bud Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals becomes the 16th rookie to throw a no-hitter in a win over the San Diego Padres.

2005 - Nebraska defeated Maine 25-7.

2006 - Tennis player Andre Agassi announced his retirement.
