1908 - Fred "Bonehead" Merkle of the New York Giants fails to touch second base while running the paths, causing the third out of the 9th inning and disallowing what was the game-winning run against the Chicago Cubs. The game ends in a tie. The Cubs and Giants then replay the game with the Cubs winning and capturing the National League pennant.
1952 - The first closed-circuit pay-TV telecast of a sporting event in the United States took place. The event was a boxing match between Rocky Marciano and Jersey Joe Walcott. The event was shown in 49 theaters across 31 cities.
