1862 - President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, declaring all slaves in rebel states should be free as of Jan. 1, 1863.

1911 - Pitcher Cy Young, age 44, gained the 511th and final victory of his career as he hurled a 1-0 shutout for the Boston Rustlers against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1912 - Eddie Collins steals six bases in a game, for second time in 11 days.

1927 - Gene Tunney successfully defended his heavyweight boxing title against Jack Dempsey in the "long count" fight in Chicago.

1934 - The NHL approved a new rule that allowed the awarding of penalty shots.

1945 - Stan Musial gets five hits off five pitchers on five consecutive pitches.

1954 - Brooklyn Dodgers' Karl Spooner strikes out 15 New York Giants' players in his first game.

1956 - Nebraska defeated South Dakota 34-6 in Pete Elliott's first game as head coach.

1962 - Bob Devaney made his debut as Nebraska's football coach with a 53-0 win over South Dakota.


1968 - Minnesota Twins' Cesar Tovar pitches a hitless inning and plays all nine positions.

1969 - Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants hit his 600th career home run during a game in San Diego.

1969 - San Francisco Giants' outfielder Bobby Bonds establishes a Major League of Baseball record as he strikeouts for the 176th time this season.

1973 - Baltimore Orioles' player Al Bumbry hits three triples versus Milwaukee Brewers.

1973 - #2 Nebraska defeated #14 North Carolina State 31-14.

1975 - The World Football League folds.

1979 - #7 Nebraska defeated Iowa 24-21.

1984 - #1 Nebraska defeated UCLA 42-3.


1985 - Michael Spinks beats Larry Holmes to become Heavyweight Boxing Champ. First time a light heavyweight defeats the reigning heavyweight champion.

1987 - Boston Red Sox' Wade Boggs gets his 200th hit in five straight seasons.

1990 - Andre Dawson steals his 300th base and is only player other than Willie Mays to have 300 home runs, 300 steals and 2,000 hits.

1990 - #8 Nebraska shutout Minnesota 56-0.

2004 - CBS-owned television stations are fined a total of $550,000 by the FCC for showing Janet Jackson's exposed right breast during the football Super Bowl halftime show.

2006 - Barry Bonds (San Francisco Giants) tied Hank Aaron's National League home run record when he hit is 733rd.

2007 - #24 Nebraska defeated Ball State 41-40.

2012 - #25 Nebraska defeated Idaho State 73-7.
