1519 - Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan set out from Spain on a voyage to find a western passage to the Spice Islands in Indonesia.

1870 - Italian troops took control of the Papal States, leading to the unification of Italy.

1873 - Panic swept through the New York Stock Exchange in the wake of railroad bond defaults and bank failures.

1881 - Chester A. Arthur was sworn in as the 21st president of the United States, succeeding James A. Garfield, who had been assassinated.

1977 - The first wave of Southeast Asian "boat people" arrived in San Francisco under a U.S. resettlement program.

2000 - Independent Counsel Robert Ray announced the end of the Whitewater investigation, saying there was insufficient evidence to charge President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary.

2001 - President George W. Bush addressed the nation and a joint-session of Congress about terrorism. He also named Tom Ridge as the head of the new Office of Homeland Security.

2005 - Holocaust survivor and Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal died at age 96.

1902 - Jim Callaghan pitched the first no-hitter in Chicago White Sox history.

1902 - Nebraska defeated Lincoln High 27-0 in an exhibition game.

1908 - Chicago White Sox' pitcher Frank Smith throws his second no-hitter of the year, beats Philadelphia Phillies 1-0.

1911 - New York Yankees set team record 12 errors in a double header.

1927 - Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season. He beat his own record of 59 that he set in 1921.

1933 - Pittsburgh Pirates play first NFL game, lose 23-2.

1948 - Mexican Baseball league disbands.

1951 - Ford Frick elected commissioner of Major League Baseball.

1952 - Nebraska opened the season with a 46-0 win over South Dakota.

1955 - Ernie Banks (Chicago Cubs) set a major league record with his fifth grand slam of the year.

1958 - Nebraska defeated Penn State 14-7 to open the season.

1961 - New York Yankees' Roger Maris hits home run number 59 and barely misses number 60 in game 154 of the season. New York Yankees clinch pennant 26.

1968 - Denny McClain (Detroit Tigers) became the first player to achieve 31 wins in 37 years.

1968 - Mickey Mantle hits the 536th and final home run of his career.

1969 - #5 USC defeated Nebraska 31-21 to open the season.

1973 - Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in a $100,000 winner-take-all battle of the sexes tennis match. An estimated 50 million people watched the match.

1973 - Willie Mays announces his retirement from baseball.

1975 - #6 Nebraska defeated Indiana 45-0.

1980 - #6 Nebraska defeated Iowa 57-0.


1981 - Marcus Allen (USC) rushed for 274 yards and scored two touchdowns in a 21-0 victory over Indiana.

1984 - Pete Rose (Cincinnati Reds) recorded his 100th hit of the season. It was the 22nd consecutive season he had recorded at least 100 hits in a season.

1986 - #6 Nebraska defeated Illinois 59-14.

1986 - Tony Gwynn (San Diego Padres) stole five bases in one game against Houston.

1987 - Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears scores his 107th rushing touchdown, breaking the career record held by Jim Brown.

1993 - John Carney (San Diego Chargers) kicked six field goals to extend his consecutive field goal streak to 29 straight games. The Chargers beat the Houston Oilers 18-17.

1997 - #7 Nebraska defeated #2 Washington 27-14.

1998 - After playing in a record 2,632 consecutive games over 16 seasons, Cal Ripken Jr. of the Baltimore Orioles sat out a game against the New York Yankees.

2001 - #4 Nebraska defeated Rice 48-3 on a Thursday night, after having been postponed from Saturday, September 15th due to the September 11 terrorist attacks.

2005 - Ground is broken for new stadiums for the Indianapolis Colts (Lucas Oil Stadium) and the Dallas Cowboys (AT&T Stadium).

2014 - #24 Nebraska defeated Miami (FL) 41-31. The 91,585 fans in attendance set a new Memorial Stadium attendance record.
