1787 - The U.S. Constitution was completed and signed by a majority of delegates attending the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.

1862 - Union forces hurled back a Confederate invasion of Maryland in the Civil War Battle of Antietam. With 23,100 killed, wounded or captured, it remains the bloodiest day in U.S. military history.

1907 - Warren Burger, the 15th chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota.

1908 - Lt. Thomas Selfridge, a passenger in a plane piloted by Orville Wright, became the first airplane fatality when the plane crashed.

1937 - The likeness of President Abraham Lincoln was dedicated at Mount Rushmore.

1939 - The Soviet Union invaded Poland during World War II.

1947 - James V. Forrestal was sworn in as the first U.S. secretary of defense.

1972 - The comedy "M*A*S*H" premiered on CBS.

1976 - NASA unveiled the prototype space shuttle Enterprise.

1980 - Former Nicaraguan president Anastasio Somoza was assassinated in Paraguay.

1986 - The Senate confirmed the nomination of William H. Rehnquist as the 16th chief justice of the Supreme Court.

1994 - Heather Whitestone of Alabama became the first deaf Miss America.

1996 - Former Vice President Spiro T. Agnew died at age 77.

2001 - Wall Street trading resumed for the first time following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks -- its longest shutdown since the Great Depression; the Dow lost 684.81 points, its worst one-day drop to date.

2003 - New York Stock Exchange chairman Dick Grasso resigned amid a furor over his $139.5 million pay package.

2004 - Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev claimed responsibility for the recent school siege in Beslan and other terrorist attacks that claimed more than 430 lives.

2011 - A demonstration calling itself Occupy Wall Street began in New York.

1920 - The American Professional Football Association -- a precursor to the National Football League -- was formed in Canton, Ohio.

1937 - First NFL game in Washington, DC; Washington Redskins beat New York Giants 13-3.

1950 - San Francisco 49ers (formerly AAFC) play first NFL game, lose 21-17.

1955 - Hawaii defeated Nebraska 6-0 to open the season.

1960 - Nebraska upsets #4 Texas 14-13 to open the season.


1961 - Minnesota Vikings' first NFL game (beat Chicago Bears 37-13).

1964 - Mickey Mantle gets hits number 1999, 2000 and 2001.

1966 - #3 Nebraska defeated TCU 14-10 to open the season.

1967 - New Orleans Saints' first NFL game, they lose to Los Angeles Rams 27-13.

1977 - Nebraska upset #4 Alabama 31-24.

1983 - #1 Nebraska routed Minnesota 84-13.


1983 - Johnny Bench, of the Cincinnati Reds, retired after 16 years as a catcher.

1983 - Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox broke Hank Aaron's major league record for games played when he started his 3,299th game.

1984 - On the seventeenth anniversary of his first major league home-run, Reggie Jackson hits his 500th career home run.

1984 - New York Mets' Dwight Goodin becomes second to strikeout 32 over two consecutive games.

1988 - The Summer Olympic Games open in Seoul, South Korea.

1994 - #2 Nebraska defeated #13 UCLA 49-21.

2001 - Professional sporting events resumed for the first time since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

2004 - San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds hit his 700th career home run, joining Babe Ruth (714) and Hank Aaron (755) as the only players in major league history to reach the milestone.

2005 - Nebraska defeated Pittsburgh 7-6.

2011 - #11 Nebraska defeated Washington 51-38.
