1638 - France's King Louis XIV was born.

1810 - Mexico began a successful revolt against Spanish rule.

1857 - The song "Jingle Bells" by James Pierpont was copyrighted under its original title, "One Horse Open Sleigh."

1893 - Hundreds of thousands of settlers took part in a land run in Oklahoma's "Cherokee Strip".

1908 - General Motors was formed in Flint, Michigan by William Durant.

1919 - The American Legion was incorporated by an act of Congress.

1940 - Rep. Samuel T. Rayburn (D-Texas), the longest-serving House speaker in history, was first elected to the post.

1940 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the first peacetime military draft in U.S. history.

1966 - The Metropolitan Opera opened its new home at New York City's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

1987 - The Montreal Protocol was signed by 25 nations, limiting production of substances that harm the ozone layer. To date, 197 nations have ratified the protocol.

1994 - A federal jury in Anchorage, Alaska, ordered Exxon Corp. to pay $5 billion in punitive damages for the 1989 Exxon Valdez (val-DEEZ') oil spill (the U.S Supreme Court later reduced that amount to $507.5 million).

2002 - U.N Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced that Iraq had unconditionally accepted the return of U.N. weapons inspectors.

2004 - Hurricane Ivan plowed into the Gulf Coast with 130 mph winds and a major storm surge; Ivan was blamed for at least 115 deaths, 43 in the United States.

2007 - A deadly shooting in Baghdad involving the U.S. security firm Blackwater USA left 17 Iraqi civilians dead.

2007 - O.J. Simpson was arrested in the alleged armed robbery of sports memorabilia collectors in Las Vegas. (Simpson was later convicted of kidnapping and armed robbery and sentenced to nine to 33 years in prison.)

2008 - The federal government announced an emergency $85 billion loan to rescue AIG, the world's largest insurance company.

1887 - The first recorded game of softball is played in Chicago.

1924 - Saint Louis Cardinals' Jim Bottomley bats in 12 RBIs in one game.

1950 - The Cleveland Rams (formerly of the AAFC) play their first NFL game, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 35-10.

1953 - The American League approves the move of the St. Louis Browns to Baltimore to become the Orioles.

1960 - Amos Alonzo Stagg retires as a football coach at the age of 98.

1967 - Nebraska opens the season with a 17-7 win over Washington.

1972 - #10 Nebraska defeats Texas A&M 37-7.


1973 - O.J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills rushes for 250 yards and two scores in a 31-13 win over the New England Patriots.

1975 - The Pittsburgh Pirates rout the Chicago Cubs 22-0. Rennie Stennett of the Pirates becomes the third player in major league history to go 7-for-7 at the plate in the game.

1978 - #12 Nebraska defeats Hawaii 56-10.

1988 - Tom Browning of the Cincinnati Reds throws a perfect game, the 12th in major league history, against the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 1-0 victory. Over the course of three starts, he retires 40 consecutive batters, one shy of the major league record.

1989 - #4 Nebraska defeats Utah 42-30.

1995 - #2 Nebraska defeats Arizona State 77-28.


2004 - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman imposed a lockout due to an impasse in contract negotiations. The players union and NHL officials did not meet again until December 9.

2006 - #4 USC defeats #19 Nebraska 28-10.
