1814 - Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner" after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the War of 1812.

1901 - President William B. McKinley died in Buffalo, New York of gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin eight days earlier. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in, and at age 42 became the youngest president to date in U.S. history.

1940 - Congress passed the Selective Training and Service Act, providing for the first peacetime draft in U.S. history.

1959 - The Soviet space probe Luna 2 became the first man-made object to reach the moon as it crashed onto the lunar surface.

1975 - Pope Paul VI declared Mother Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton the first U.S.-born saint.

1982 - Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly actress Grace Kelly, died at age 52 of injuries suffered in a car crash.

2001 - The FBI released the names of the 19 hijackers who took part in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks; President George W. Bush toured the ruins of the World Trade Center and addressed rescue workers over a bullhorn.

1916 - Christy Mathewson (Cincinnati Reds) won his 373rd career game. It was the only victory he had earned for a team other than the New York Giants during his 17-year career.

1930 - The Portsmouth Spartans play their first NFL game (they are now the Detroit Lions).

1968 - Denny McLain of the Detroit Tigers wins his 30th game of the season. He was the first 30-game winner in 34 years.

1968 - #14 Nebraska defeated Wyoming 13-10 to open the season.

1973 - President Richard Nixon signs a law lifting professional football's blackout.

1974 - #7 Nebraska opened the season with a 61-7 rout of Oregon.

1986 - NFL running back Bo Jackson hits his first home run as a baseball rookie for the Kansas City Royals.

1987 - The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 18-3; the Blue Jays set a major league record of ten home runs; Orioles' player Cal Ripken Junior sets record consecutive-innings streak of 8,243, spanning 904 games.

1989 - The Calgary Flames become the first NHL team to play a game in the Soviet Union, they win 4-2.

1991 - #13 Nebraska defeated Colorado State 71-14.

1994 - The remainder of the major league baseball season was canceled, including the World Series, on the 34th day of a strike by the players. It was the first time since 1904 there would be no World Series held.

2002 - American sprinter Tim Montgomery set a new world record in the 100 meter dash at 9.78 seconds, breaking the old record of 9.79 set by Maurice Green in 1999.

2002 - #8 Nebraska lost on the road to Penn State 40-7.

2003 - Jamal Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens set an NFL record for rushing yards in a single-game when he ran for 295 yards in a 33-13 win over the Cleveland Browns.

2003 - Vinny Testaverde of the New York Jets became the ninth player in NFL history to pass for over 40,000 yards.

2013 - #16 UCLA defeated #23 Nebraska 41-21.
