1789 - Alexander Hamilton was appointed the first secretary of the treasury.

1814 - An American fleet scored a decisive victory over the British in the Battle of Lake Champlain during the War of 1812.

1850 - Jenny Lind, the "Swedish Nightingale," gave her first concert in the United States, at Castle Garden in New York.

1857 - The Mountain Meadows Massacre took place in present-day southern Utah as a 120-member Arkansas immigrant party was slaughtered by Mormon militiamen aided by Paiute Indians.

1885 - Author D.H. Lawrence was born in Eastwood, England.

1936 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam) in Nevada.

1941 - Groundbreaking took place for the Pentagon.

1941 - Charles A. Lindbergh sparked charges of anti-Semitism with a speech in which he blamed "The British, the Jewish and the Roosevelt administration" for trying to draw the United States into World War II.

1954 - The Miss America pageant aired on network television for the first time, on ABC. Miss California, Lee Meriwether, was crowned the winner.

1962 - The Beatles recorded their first single, "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You" at EMI Studios in London.

1971 - Former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev died at age 77.

1973 - Chilean President Salvador Allende died in a violent military coup.

1997 - In Scotland, voters approved the establishment of a parliament to run their domestic affairs, after 290 years of union with England.

2001 - Suicide hijackers crashed two airliners into the World Trade Center in New York, causing the 110-story twin towers to collapse. Another hijacked airliner hit the Pentagon and a fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. More than 3,000 people died as a result of the terrorist attack.

2007 - China signed an agreement to prohibit the use of lead paint on toys exported to the United States.

2012 - Armed gunmen stormed the American consulate in Benghazi and killed U.S. ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other embassy officials.

1912 - Philadelphia Athletics' Eddie Collins steals six bases in one game.

1918 - The Boston Red Sox defeat the Chicago Cubs in six games to win the World Series. (The Series was played early due to World War I.)

1936 - Philadelphia Athletics' pitcher Horace Lisenbee gives up 26 hits in a game.

1943 - The NHL approved the Hockey Hall of Fame. The official building for the hall of fame was not opened until August 26, 1961 on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition.

1946 - The Brooklyn Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds played to a scoreless tie in 19 innings.

1956 - Cincinnati Reds' player Frank Robinson ties rookie record with his 38th home run.

1959 - Elroy Face's 22-game win streak ends as Los Angeles Dodgers beat Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4.

1959 - Baltimore Orioles' player Jerry Walker pitches 16 innings beating Chicago White Sox 1-0.

1960 - The Olympic Games come to a close in Rome, Italy.

1966 - Johnny Miller becomes the first New York Yankees' player to hit a home run on his first at bat.

1971 - #2 Nebraska opened the season with a 34-7 win over Oregon.

1974 - Saint Louis Cardinals beat New York Mets, 4-3, in 25 innings (7 hours 4 minutes), record 202 plate appearances, Felix Milan and John Milner come to bat 12 times each.

1976 - #1 Nebraska and LSU opened the season with a 6-6 tie in Baton Rouge.

1982 - #3 Nebraska opened the season with a 42-7 win over Iowa.


1982 - Chris Evert scores 6th US Open tennis title defeating Hana Mandlikava.

1983 - Franco Harris becomes third NFL player to rush for 11,000 yards.

1985 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds recorded his 4,192nd hit, breaking Ty Cobb's career record.

1993 - #9 Nebraska defeated Texas Tech 50-27.

1999 - #5 Nebraska defeated California 45-0.


1999 - Brett Favre and Robert Brooks of the Green Bay Packers completed a 99-yard touchdown reception against the Chicago Bears to tie an NFL record.

2002 - Football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas died at age 69.

2004 - Barry Bonds becomes the first major league baseball player to walk over 200 times in a single season.

2004 - Nebraska was upset at home by Southern Mississippi 21-17.

2009 - Michael Jordan was enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

2010 - #6 Nebraska defeated Idaho 38-17.
