1635 - Religious dissident and Rhode Island founder, Roger Williams, was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

1888 - The Washington Monument was opened to the public.

1910 - A coal dust explosion at the Starkville Mine in Colorado left 56 miners dead.

1930 - Aviator Laura Ingalls became the first woman to make a solo transcontinental flight across the United States.

1936 - The first generator at Boulder (later Hoover) Dam began transmitting electricity to Los Angeles.

1962 - Uganda won autonomy from British rule.

1967 - Marxist revolutionary guerrilla leader Che Guevara, 39, was summarily executed by the Bolivian army a day after his capture.

1975 - Soviet scientist Andrei Sakharov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end the nuclear arms race.

1985 - The hijackers of the Achille Lauro cruise liner surrendered two days after seizing the vessel in the Mediterranean and killing passenger Leon Klinghoffer.

2001 - In the first daylight raids since the start of U.S.-led attacks on Afghanistan, jets bombed the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar.

2006 - Google Inc. announced it was snapping up YouTube Inc. for $1.65 billion in a stock deal.

2009 - Despite minimal time in office, President Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for what the Norwegian Nobel Committee called "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

2010 - Chile's 33 trapped miners cheered and embraced each other as a drill punched into their underground chamber where they had been stuck for an agonizing 66 days.

2018 - Taylor Swift captured four honors at the American Music Awards to become the most decorated woman in the show's history.

1909 - Nebraska defeats Knox 34-0.


1915 - Woodrow Wilson becomes the first sitting U.S. president to attend a World Series game.

1915 - Nebraska defeats Kansas State 31-0.

1919 - The Cincinnati Reds won the World Series. The win would be later tainted when 8 Chicago White Sox were charged with throwing the game. The incident became known as the "Black Sox" scandal.

1920 - Nebraska defeats Colorado State 7-0.

1926 - Missouri defeats Nebraska 14-7.


1928 - The New York Yankees sweep the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series.

1934 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the Detroit Tigers in seven games to win the World Series.

1937 - Nebraska defeats Iowa State 20-7.

1943 - Indiana defeats Nebraska 54-13.


1944 - The St. Louis Cardinals defeat the St. Louis Browns in six games to win the World Series.

1948 - Colorado defeats Nebraska 19-6.

1949 - The New York Yankees defeat the Brooklyn Dodgers in five games to win the World Series.

2000 - Brett Hull of the Dallas Stars scored his 611th NHL goal. The goal allowed him to pass his father, Bobby Hull, on the all time scoring list bringing him to number 9.

2002 - The Los Angeles Kings retired Wayne Gretzky's #99.

2004 - Texas Tech defeats Nebraska 70-10.

2012 - Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was sentenced in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, to 30 to 60 years in prison following his conviction on 45 counts of sexual abuse of boys.

2021 - #9 Michigan defeats Nebraska 32-29.
